Serres-Morlaàs is a French municipality with 783 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Pays de Morlaàs et du Montanérès (until 2015: canton of Morlaàs ).

The name of the municipality is of Gascognic origin, means "hill" and is linked to the geographical location on a hill above the valley of the Luy de Béarn .

The inhabitants are called Serres-Morlanais and Serres-Morlanaises .

Serres-Morlaàs is located approx. 10 km northeast and therefore in the urban catchment area of Pau in the historic province of Béarn .

history

The history goes back a long way, as evidenced by foundations identified in aerial photographs, as well as due to an accumulation of pebbles in the ground. In the Middle Ages it was a manor of a rather smaller size, which was subordinate to the Commandery of the Order of Malta of Caubin and Morlaàs , who exercised jurisdiction in the village. In the 1385 census , five houses were counted and the village was part of the Bailliage of Pau.

Population development

After the beginning of the record, the parish grew and its size reached a level of around 300 inhabitants in the first half of the 19th century, which was roughly maintained until the turn of the century. As a result, the number of residents fell to around 200 in the 1940s. Since then, the community has been in a strong growth phase.

The Autoroute A64 , called La Pyrénéenne , also crosses the municipality, but without a direct exit to the village. However, there is a motorway parking lot on the territory of the municipality. The closest exit 11 is approx. 10 km away.

Personalities

Pierre-Marie Théas , born on September 14, 1894 in Barzun , died on April 3, 1977 in Pau, was Bishop of Montauban and Tarbes and Lourdes . His family lived in Serres-Morlaàs. During the German occupation of France in World War II , as Bishop of Montauban, he publicly campaigned against the persecution and deportation of the Jews in pastoral letters . He was arrested by the Gestapo and taken to the Royallieu concentration camp near Compiègne , ( Département Oise ). Held hostage because of the advancing Allies, he escaped deportation in the summer of 1944, unlike many inmates. In 1969 he received the honorary title Righteous Among the Nations for his services . After the war, Pierre-Marie Théas campaigned for the rapid release of German prisoners of war and for Franco-German reconciliation in the Pax Christi movement, of which he was president until 1950.
