Bellocq is a French municipality with 906 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It is a bastide village . The inhabitants are called Bellocquais (es).

geography

Bellocq is located in the former province of Béarn 13 kilometers northwest of Orthez on the European route 80 , there also called Autoroute 64 or La Pyrénéenne . The Gave de Pau and the D430 cross the municipality.

history

There was already a settlement near Bellocq in Gallo-Roman times . Around 200 n. Chr. Is settled Romans , which the viticulture brought.

The spelling of the place name changed since the 12th century from Beitloc to Pulcher Locus in 1286, Bégloc 1327 and a little later Belloc to Betloc in 1582. The place has had its current name since 1801. The place name Bellocq is the French version of Gasconian words bèth , which means "beautiful", and lòc , which means "place". So it means something like "beautiful place". In today's Occitan spelling it would have to be written Bellòc .

In 1250 Gaston VII. De Béarn († 1290) decided to build a castle to protect the area around Orthez. In 1280 the castle was finished and a year later the bastide village.

In the Middle Ages, the community was often visited because it was on the Camino de Santiago and very close to the post office in Puyoô . The depiction of a pilgrim above the entrance to the church dates from that time.

Attractions

The square castle of Bellocq ( Château de Bellocq ) was built towards the end of the 13th century. It has seven towers. In the 14th century Gaston III. Fébus (born April 30, 1331 in Orthez, † August 1, 1391) revise it, in the 17th century it was destroyed. Today it is partly privately owned and partly owned by the municipality. It has been classified as a Monument historique (historical monument) since 1997 .
