Bassillon-Vauzé is a commune with 66 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Terres des Luys et Coteaux du Vic-Bilh (until 2015: canton of Lembeye ).

Bassillon-Vauzé is located in the Vic-Bilh region on the eastern edge of the department approx. 40 km northeast of Pau in the historic province of Béarn between the Lac de Lembeye-Corbère and Lac de Bassillon-Vauzé reservoirs.

Bassillon-Vauzé lies in the catchment area of ​​the Adour River . A tributary of the Léez , the Larcis , flows on the eastern municipal boundary and through the Lac de Bassillon-Vauzé. history

A fortified structure was built in the 11th or 12th century, the former seat of the feudal lord de Rode, mentioned since the end of the 12th century, and the Viguerie of Lembeye . This moth could have come from prehistory on the foundations of a building . A lay monastery was also established in Vauzé, which was dependent on the vicomte of Béarn.

In the census of 1385 7 households were counted in Basilhoo and it was noted that the settlement is in the Bailliage of Pau. Bassillon is also mentioned in the following: Basilhoo (census, 1402), Bacilhoo (around 1540), Baxilho (1542), Basilhon (1546) and Bacilhon ( Reformation of Béarn, around 1550).

The former commune Vauzé appears in the mentions under the following toponyms : Bausee and Bauser (1538), Beauzé (1675), Vauzer (Reformation of Béarn 1682) and Vauser (counting of Candau , 1768). On the map of Cassini 1750, Bassillon is entered as Baßillon (= Bassillon ) and Vauzé as Vauzé . In 1833 the two villages merged.

Population development

Since the merger of the two villages, the number of inhabitants has declined until the 1960s and has shrunk to around a quarter. Since then it has remained at a level of little more than 70 inhabitants.

  • Church in Bassillon dedicated Gerontius, bishop of Aire-sur-l'Adour in the 5th century, the parts of the Gascogne Christianized . The date of construction of the original building is unknown. The year 1783 above the entrance on the north side of the church refers to the time of restoration or rebuilding. The single-nave building is covered with slate and has a bell gable on its west facade. Inside, objects and stained glass windows from the 18th and 19th centuries, which are registered as national cultural assets, are preserved.
  • Church in Vauzé, dedicated to the Apostle Bartholomew . The vault ribs suggest that the church was built in the 16th century. The year 1773 on the lintel above the entrance of the church on the south side refers to the time of restoration or reconstruction. Economy and Infrastructure

The fertile soil and the geographical location are favorable for viticulture . However, the phylloxera destroyed most of the cultivation area towards the end of the 19th century, which has since been converted to the cultivation of maize .
