history

Memorial plaque to the Battle of Mesplède in 1442

The settlement in the Gallo-Roman period is documented by a former camp. In the last phase of the Hundred Years' War , Mesplède was the scene of a battle that took place on August 25, 1442, in which one thousand Mesplède farmers according to tradition perished. Gaston IV , Count of Foix and Viscount des Béarn, gave up his neutrality in favor of the French king. But after the conquest of Dax by English troops in 1442, French troops moved into the Béarn and the population began to revolt. The toll of blood, of which a memorial plaque on the church square commemorates, ultimately ensured the independence of the Béarn for another period.

The village has belonged to Arthez since it was first mentioned around 1450, but with this formative event it sought independence, which was finally achieved in 1707. Even today, the parish consists essentially of scattered farms typical of the Béarn.

Toponyms and mentions of Mesplède were:

  • Mesplède (1863, Dictionnaire topographique du département des Basses-Pyrénées )
