The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs ( French Ministère de l'Europe et des Affaires étrangères ) is the Foreign Ministry of the French Republic . It is also called the Quai d'Orsay after its seat on the Quai d'Orsay , a quay along the Seine in Paris . It has been headed by Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian since May 17, 2017 .

history

The ministry has a long tradition that goes back to the Ancien Régime . In 1547 the first Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Claude de L'Aubespine , was appointed.

From 1981 to 1986 (under Mitterrand) the Ministry was called Ministère des Relations extérieures - to show that foreign countries are not “foreign” to the government.

task

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs includes the 166 embassies in sovereign states and international organizations , which regularly inform the government, as well as the consulates .

External security , economic relations , foreign cultural policy (for example the French cultural organizations such as the Institut français ) are important tasks.

There has been a State Secretary for European Affairs since 1950 and a State Secretary for Francophonie since 1959 .

The house has a budget of 4.6 billion euros (2009) and employs 14,800 people.
