history

The original inhabitants of Cescau benefited from the preferred geographical location on a hill, which helped the complex of easy-to-defend fortifications. Traces of numerous camps from early history , e.g. B. the Turon deu Bourier , the Turounet de Las Mouleres and the Cazalet camp are evidence of early settlement.

In the census in 1385, 31 households and the affiliation of the village to the Bailliage of Pau were recorded in Sescau . Since the community is on the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela , the Coming Saint-Onofre of the Order of St. John soon established itself . At the beginning of the 15th century, a pilgrims' hostel was attached to the Chapel of the Coming to receive pilgrims . No traces of these buildings are visible today, as they were destroyed during the French Revolution .

Another toponym and mention of the community was in the documents of Cassaber in 1572 as Sesquau . On the map of Cassini 1750 the municipality is shown in its present form.

Population development

After the first highs of the population up to the middle of the 19th century with 550 inhabitants, the number fell to below 200 until after the Second World War . Since then, the number of residents has increased due to the proximity to surrounding cities such as Pau and Mourenx and has exceeded the historical highs.

  • Local church dedicated to the beheading of John the Baptist . On the site of the Chapel of the Coming of St. John, which disappeared during the French Revolution, a new church was built in 1823 to replace a simple church. Rows of four bays with round arches separate the three naves ; various false vaults (groin, basin and ridge vaults ) cover the nave . In 1844 a restoration was planned by the architect Paul Poublan from Pau, in 1864 another one, which this time resulted in a new building of the church. The work was carried out between 1867 and 1869 under the leadership of the architect Henri d'Arnaudat. In 1868 a number of stained glass windows with figures and symbols from Mauméjean stained glass from Pau were used. The main altar dates from the time the present church was built. In the neo-Gothic style of the time, it is decorated with floral ornaments . A tabernacle is set up on it, surrounded by seven candlesticks, which are lined up on steps on either side. The tabernacle is shielded by a canopy supported on four pillars . At its top is the altar cross made of decorated metal. On one wall in the church there is a stele in memory of the French soldiers of the community who fell in World War I. It combines patriotic motifs (soldier's helmet , French national flags, bundles of lictors , oak garland) with religious ( angels , Latin cross , Pietà ). An angel carrying a palm branch is an allegory of victory. In the lower part a grieving female figure is depicted sitting at the graves of fallen soldiers.
  • Cescau School. Due to the increasing number of children in the village, the school building was erected in the center of the village in the second half of the 19th century and in the first half of the 20th century. Its structure is characteristic of school buildings of that time. It has two floors and an attic that is illuminated via an oculus in the center of the front gable. The ground floor contains the classrooms, the first floor the living rooms of the teaching staff.
