Bougarber ( Occitan : Borg Garber ) is a French commune of the department Pyrénées-Atlantiques with 852 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . Administratively it is assigned to the canton of Artix et Pays de Soubestre (until 2015: canton of Lescar ) and the Arrondissement of Pau . The inhabitants are called Bougarbersia .

geography

Bougarber is located at the foot of the Pyrenees about 14 kilometers northwest of Pau in the Béarn wine region . Bougarber is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Vielle-d'Arthez in the north, Uzein in the east, Poey-de-Lescar and Beyrie-en-Béarn in the south, Denguin in the west and south-west and Cescau in the west and north-west. The A65 autoroute runs along the eastern edge of the municipality .

history

Bougarber was founded as a bastide . The Order of St. John maintained a command here for many years. Between 1802 and 1809 the neighboring commune of Beyrie-en-Béarn was part of the municipality.
