history

There was probably a Roman military camp on the territory of the municipality , surrounded by ditches and embankments, as evidenced by finds from the Gallo-Roman period, such as a mortar , a fragrance lamp and a Roman weight. The Romanesque church, built on a moth , and the first simple castle date from the 11th century. In 1040 lay monasteries were mentioned that were dependent on the Viscount of Béarn, and in 1050 landlords were mentioned. In the 1385 census in Béarn, 27 households were recorded in Lalongue, including that of the noble Saussanet de Lescun, and it was noted that the place belonged to the Bailliage of Lembeye .

During the territorial redistribution during the French Revolution , Lalongue was enlarged on August 4, 1794 by the former municipality of Besacourp (today's name Besecour), which comprised nine houses at that time. The official announcement also revealed that the Church had since been transformed into a so-called Temple of Reason as part of the Revolution .

The faithful of the Moncaubet district have belonged to the parish of Simacourbe from the very beginning. Simacourbe asked the parish of Lalongue to contribute to the maintenance of the Simacourbe church and to rent the rectory, which the parish of Lalongue rejected. On August 10, 1875, the Moncaubet district was finally ceded to the municipality of Simacourbe after thirty years of tug-of-war.

On July 8, 1944, German occupation troops combed the houses of the community in search of resistance fighters . The operation ended with no harm for the population and without a massacre .

Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to Martin of Tours . Some remains of the original Romanesque building from the 11th century are still visible today, such as B. the decoration of the window of the semicircular apse or the capitals of the columns with plant ornaments. The church is surrounded by the cemetery and protected by an earth wall. A bell gable protrudes from the facade on the west side . Towards the end of the 18th century it was rebuilt, as the year 1776 confirms on a cartouche on the south wall. Significant restorations took place in 1837 and 1911. In the latter works, the window openings of the single nave nave were enlarged, a side chapel and the entrance porch were added. The main altar is dedicated to Mary , mother of Jesus Christ . A statue above the marble tabernacle depicts her with the baby Jesus in her arms. She wears a long dress, a shawl and a golden crown on her head. Other furnishings in the church date from the 17th to 19th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.
  • Castle of Lalongue. The manor, which was first mentioned in 1060 and to which a lay monastery was added, passed through several hands over the centuries: Arnaud Raymond d'Espoey (1060), Sansaner de Lescun (1385), landlord of Moncaubet (1538), Andoins family ( 1576), Guillaume de Lamarque (1611), Latapy family, Germenaud family (1652), Anne de Béarn (1681), Charles Deschiens de Laneuville (1695), Dufau family, Pierre d'Arripe, director of the Bayonne Mint (1766) . The latter probably rebuilt the simple castle from the 11th century, which was in ruins at the time. Towards the end of the 19th century, Pierre Yermoloff initiated renovation work on all window and door openings and enlargements. Today the castle is known for its English landscape garden with rare species, which was created by Alexandre Yermeloff at the end of the 19th century.
