Mont-Disse is located in the catchment area of the Adour River . The Larcis , a tributary of the Lées , marks the eastern border with the neighboring municipalities of Aubous, Aydie and Arrosès. Two tributaries of the Lasrcis, the Lisau and the Ruisseau de Libet, cross the area of the municipality and flow into the Larcis in Mont-Disse.

history

The center of today's Mont-Disse lies on a slope of a hill at the confluence of the Lisau and Larcis rivers. On the highest point of the hill, traces of a fortified structure can still be seen today in the form of an irregular diamond. Remains of ditches and embankments between 1.5 m and 2 m high can be seen on the sides. The first settlement was probably founded here during the Gallo-Roman period or at the very beginning of the Middle Ages .

The landlords of the two villages have been mentioned in the records since the early 12th century. In the census in 1385, nine households were counted in Mont and twelve in Disse. Both were under the Bailliage of Lembeye . The municipality of Disse joined the municipality of Mont in 1794, which has been called Mont-Disse since 1931.

Toponyms and mentions of Mont were:

  • Ezmont (12th century, according to Pierre de Marca's book Histoire de Béarn , p. 449),
  • Le Mont de Vic-Vielh (1385, census in the Béarn),
  • Le Mont (1750, map by Cassini ),
  • Mont (1793 and 1801, Notice Communale and Bulletin des Lois, respectively ) and
  • Mont-Disse (1931, Notice Communale ).

  • Dissa and Dyssa (1538 and 1546, respectively, manuscript collection from the 16th to 18th centuries) and
  • Duisse (1750, map by Cassini).

Population development

After a peak of the population of around 385 in the first half of the 19th century, the number was reduced to a level of around 75 during short growth phases by the turn of the millennium, which is still maintained today.

Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to St. Stephen . Most of the building and the southern entrance portal date from the second half of the 12th century. The church was enlarged with the addition of a sacristy in the 18th century, and a small bell tower was added in the 19th century . The western entrance portal in neo-Gothic style dates from 1864, as confirmed by its inscription with the corresponding year. The single nave nave ends with a Romanesque apse with a semi-domed vault and three windows. It is equipped with a buttress and decorated with a cornice with corbels. A Christ monogram is incorporated on the tympanum of the entrance portal , traditionally showing the letters Rho (“P”) and Chi (“X”) and Alpha and Omega . Two half suns to the left of the loop of the Rho are striking, a symbolism that is not often encountered. Likewise, the common "S" for "Salvator" ( German savior ), which often loops around the foot of the Rho, is missing. Two columns , the capitals of which are decorated with foliage , birds and mythical animals, frame the entrance. Two stained glass windows are works by Mauméjean stained glass from the first half of the 20th century. Other items of equipment date from the 18th and 19th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.
  • Castle of Mont. Erected in the 16th century, it served as the seat of the lordship of Mont, which passed to the Hiton family in 1753. They enlarged the property in 1770 and 1780 and kept it until 1844. They added a part of the building to the east of the residential wing and had the facade reworked in order to create a symmetry that characterizes all the important houses of the Vic-Bilh. Renewed restorations were carried out in the 20th century. Today only the square tower, the windows with benches and the chimneys remain from the original building. The castle is privately owned and cannot be visited.
