Idron is a French municipality with 4846 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the Canton of Pau-2 (until 2015: Canton of Pau-Est ). The inhabitants are called Idronnais .

geography

Idron is located in the historic province of Béarn on the river Ousse . Idron is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Morlaàs in the north and northeast, Sendets in the northeast, Lée in the east, Meillon in the south and southeast, Aressy in the southwest, Bizanos in the west and Pau in the west and northwest.

The former route nationale 117 (today's D817) runs through the municipality . The A64 autoroute runs along the northeastern edge of the municipality .

history

During the Second World War , the Maison de retraite, also called villa Catalogne, served as an internment sanatorium for inmates of the Camp de Gurs, among others . The Jewish- German poet Alfred Mombert , who was deported to Gurs as part of the Wagner-Bürckel campaign , was relocated here for health reasons in April 1941 and spent the months leading up to his emigration to Switzerland in October 1941.
