Attractions

church

It is dedicated to John the Baptist . Since the meeting between Gaston IV of Béarn and Bernard III. von Armagnac in the Romanesque church is documented in the scriptures in 1104, it can be assumed that the church was built towards the end of the 11th and beginning of the 12th centuries. In the Middle Ages, the imposing bell tower served as a defense against conflicts in this area, which is coveted by many sides. Two narrow arched notches above the entrance portal underline this function.

The portal dates from the same period as the church was built, although it underwent some changes in the 15th century. The capitals on the four columns on either side of the door show various decorations , such as B. griffins , foliage, personalities of the Romanesque era, dignitaries with wide clothing. The abacuses and archivolts have floral ornaments such as palmettes or foliage . The tympanum , which was added in 1471, shows, among other things, a Christ monogram with a diameter of 40 cm, which is surrounded by two circles with floral ornaments, and above two doves with entwined necks.

The paneled ceiling inside the nave is covered with small paw crosses and rosettes . It probably dates from the 17th century, but it was undoubtedly changed during a restoration in the 19th century. A trompe-l'oeil is the central motif on the ceiling, which gives the illusion of an opening in the sky. A cross with a halo is seen surrounded by a swarm of cherubs , two of which a banner hold that entwined the cross. The perspective is created by the painted balustrade that surrounds the motif like a frame.

Two columns, which frame a painting, characterize the altarpiece in front of the rear wall of the choir . An abundance of vines, foliage, and putti stand out against the pale blue background on these pillars. The painting in oil shows Christ crucified , in the background a landscape at dusk. It probably dates from the 17th century, but it was restored in the 19th century. The gilded wood tabernacle that bears the altarpiece is decorated with motifs of groups of people and garlands of flowers as a half-relief , as are the bases of the columns of the altarpiece. The antependium of the altar shows an elegant arrangement of foliage, birds and garlands that entwine a medallion depicting the baptism of Jesus . On both sides of the altarpiece, six full-size statues tower up, probably from the 18th century by the artist Giraudy, who is known in the region. Two of these statues can be recognized as depictions of Saints Peter and Paul . The ceiling of the choir is covered with gold stars on a pale blue background. A dove in a halo , symbol of the Holy Spirit , occupies the center of the choir ceiling. The frieze that decorates the end of the choir ceiling repeats the ornaments of the altarpiece with depictions of vases with suggested flames, foliage and fantasy animals.

A rare example of preserved woodwork from the 17th century in a church is the pulpit on the north longitudinal wall. The panels of the parapet are decorated with crosses, the one on the wall is decorated with garlands. A putti can be seen on the pulpit lid carrying a crucifix .

The baptismal font from the 17th century in a small side chapel exudes a certain sobriety. The basin is carved from a monolith and rests on a round base, which can be a piece of a column and does not seem to fit the basin in its proportions. On the wall behind the baptismal font is a painting of the patron saint John the Baptist when he baptized Jesus with the water of the Jordan . Many other furnishings in the church from the 18th and 19th centuries are registered as national cultural assets.

Castle of Diusse

The Diusse castle was inhabited in the 17th century by the powerful Brumont-Disse family, landlords of the municipality and wealthy landowners. They kept the property until 1830, when the building went to the Bordeu family from the Ossau Valley before Jean Jacob bought it in 1838. He handed the chateau over to the Saint-Julien family in 1852, who gave it its current appearance. During renovation work, they had the mosaic in the vestibule in particular laid out with the family coat of arms. In the period that followed, the castle passed through several hands until Mr Sansoube bought the building in 1940 and renovated the orangery , had the staircase restored to its original state and redesigned several rooms. After the acquisition by Mr. Baillet in the 1970s, a medical and social facility is housed in the outbuildings of the castle, which helps disabled people to integrate into work and society. She cultivates around 15 hectares of vineyards for the production of AOC Madiran , Rosé du Béarn and Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh wines . The castle is built in the style of the French classic of the 17th century, although the windows and doors already suggest the architectural style of the 18th century. A large entrance portal, of which remains can still be seen today, allows access to the two-story main building, which is flanked by two pavilions and overlooked by half a story. The door is framed by pilasters , each of which has three spheres on the cornice .

The castle and furnishings such as a table fountain from the 18th century as well as five fireplace pictures and a painting by the painter René-Marie Castaing from Pau from the first half of the 20th century are registered as national cultural assets.
