Parish Church of Saint-Germain-d'Auxerre in Escoubès

Parish church

The church, dedicated to Germanus von Auxerre , was probably built in the 12th century, as the structure of the nave and apse suggest a Romanesque design. The entrance and the north aisle probably date from the 16th century, while the bell tower was built as an entrance porch around 1775, as evidenced by an inscription above the door. The south aisle was added after 1833. The complete restoration project was abandoned in 1903.

The altarpiece was created at the end of the 17th or the beginning of the 18th century. It comes from Esquiule Church , which was demolished towards the end of the 19th century. Perhaps for this reason it differs from others in the north-eastern region of the Béarns. Its body has a niche in the middle with a statue, framed by winding columns , so-called serpent columns , and is finished with an architecturally designed crown at the top. Wings are arranged at an oblique angle on both sides, the outer sides of which end with a serpentine column and further outside with a gold-plated wing piece. The pillars are covered with ornaments such as vine tendrils, bird wings and cherubs .

A stained glass window is the work of Mauméjean stained glass from Pau from 1875 and shows a biblical scene with the Archangel Michael who conquered the devil. Two glass windows in each aisle were made by the glass painter Joseph Faure from Gaillac . The works, created in the first half of the 20th century, show the Annunciation of the Lord and the formation of the Virgin.

On the walls inside the church there are three statuettes depicting Joan of Arc , Anthony of Padua and Therese of Lisieux . Joan of Arc is dressed in armor as a reminder that she successfully led the French troops against the English opponents in the Hundred Years War . She also wears a blue tunic , similar to statues or images of Mary , the mother of Jesus, to remember that she is one of the three patron saints of France. The figure of Anthony of Padua, on the other hand, wears the scanty monk's robe made of brown woolen cloth of a Franciscan , tied with a cord with three knots. In this motif he supports the appearance of the baby Jesus , which he is holding over an open book. The figure of Therese of Lisieux is in the habit of Carmelite nuns dressed. She wears a crucifix surrounded by roses , a reference to her words that she would rain roses after her death.

The pulpit of the church, created between 1750 and 1780, is leaning against the wall to the side aisle, into which its pulpit stairs lead. It consists of wooden panels with gilded reliefs made of imitation wood, the evangelists on the pulpit, the good shepherd on the wall panel and a dove as a sign of the Holy Spirit and an angel under the pulpit cover. Ornaments are also abundant in the form of godroning , volutes and foliage .

The holy water basin is a small tub for the holy water with which the believers cross themselves when entering and leaving the church. It was created around 1850 and consists of a white marble basin and a black marble base.

Motte of Berdolou

The community has one of the most important mounds on which there was a castle in the Middle Ages . The earthfill with a diameter of 25 m lies on a rock ledge at the confluence of the Gabas with one of its tributaries. Earthfills upstream and downstream indicate a ring wall that was built before the Middle Ages.

Memorial in honor of the fallen soldiers

The special thing about this monument in Escoubès is that instead of the names of the soldiers who died in World War I , as in most other communities, 17 portraits with names are attached to circles made of white porcelain on a wooden frame.
