In the Middle Ages Bonnut was on the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela . The abbot of a lay monastery and the landlord of Tilh shared the manor , which resulted in a chapel each for the two corresponding parishes of Saint-Martin and Sainte-Marie . On the map of Cassini 1750, the municipality of Bonnut is already marked with its current name. Please note the information about the two parishes and that the border with Landes runs south of the parish. Bonnut was part of Chalosse, a part of the Landes.

Population development

After the population peaked at the beginning of the 19th century with more than 1200 inhabitants, the rural exodus began and reduced the number to almost half, especially in the first half of the 20th century up to the turn of the millennium. Since then, the number has increased slightly again.

Attractions

  • Church dedicated to Martin von Tours , built in the 15th century to replace the church mentioned in the 12th century, restored in the 20th century. The striking thing about the church are the white stones that decorate the roof ridges of the church tower from the top of the tower to the dormers below .
  • Chapel of Sainte-Marie . It is one of the few remaining examples of Romanesque architecture in the Béan, which can be recognized by the rounded choir . The original building dates from the 12th century and has been changed over and over again in the following centuries. The church tower and the large porch above the entrance were built in the 18th or 19th century.
  • Town hall. In 2007 the community moved into a former chapel, the only remaining visible sign of which is the roof turret in the form of a belfry .
  • House Populus. What is special about the building are borrowings from the Chalosse, to which Bonnut belonged for a time, and a dovecote in the back of the courtyard.
  • Tarruc de Montargou. Traces of ditches of the mound castle on a strategically favorable place on a hill above the valley of the Ruisseau de l'Ourseau are visible in the district of Gastou.
