geography

Argagnon is located about 36 kilometers northwest of Pau between Pau and Orthez in the Béarn .

The community is surrounded by the neighboring communities:

Argagnon is located in the Adour catchment area on the right bank of the Gave de Pau and on the left bank of one of its tributaries, the Ruisseau de Clamondé.

history

The area of the municipality has been populated since prehistory due to its favorable geographical location on the banks of the Gaves de Pau . This is proven by finds of clay dishes that go back to the Iron Age . The presence of residents during the occupation by the Roman Empire is evidenced not only by the etymology of the place name, but also by the Roman military camp at the site of today's castle park. It is believed that the name Arganion goes back to the designation "Manor of Arcanius".

Paul Raymond, archivist and historian of the 19th century, noted the mention of the settlement under the name Arganion in 977 in the Copial Book of Bigorre County . In a census in 1385 9 households were counted and it was noted that the village is in the Bailliage of Pau. The introduction of a fiefdom in 1538 also shows the establishment of the nobility in the community.

On April 8, 1851, the municipalities of Argagnon and Marcerin were merged to the municipality of Argagnon-Marcerin, with the name Marcerin being withdrawn over time.

Paul Raymond noted the mention of Marcerin under the name Marcerii in 1345 by a notary from Pardies . In the census of 1385, 12 households were counted and, as in Argagnon, it was noted that the village is in the Bailliage of Pau.

Attractions

  • The Saint-Pierre church , dedicated to the apostle Simon Peter , was originally built in the Romanesque style in the 11th century. Around 1866 an extension was carried out under the direction of the architect Jean Touzis from Pau. Two side chapels and the sacristy were added, the vault construction and roof were renewed. A year later the walls were raised by 1.35 m.
  • Turoû de Dous Garos: This is a former fortified camp from earlier times. It consists of three terraces that rise 90 m above the level. Ditches and three earth walls surround the camp. Fragments of mosaic and especially clay dishes from the Iron Age show that the site was used after its early fortification.

In addition to agriculture, the proximity to the industrial area of Lacq determines the economic life in the municipality and ensures a growth in the population.
