history

Several archaeological finds prove the existence of residents of the area since prehistory . These are ceramic fragments on the site of a former fortified camp, which was surrounded by a ten-meter-high wall and a moat, and several barrows along an old mountain path and near the camp. The village itself has been around since the first and second centuries BC. Settled.

In the early 13th century, the landlords built their homes on a motte . The oval was about 15 meters high, 20 meters long and ten meters wide and contained a statue of the Virgin Mary Nouste Dama dou Mouta . In 1476 the Viscount of Béarn shared the manor with the landlord of Andoins . In 1675 the moth came into the possession of the community. Since the 14th century, the village was directly under the Viscount of Béarn. The residents experienced rights and freedoms, but in return had to fortify the community and maintain a permanent garrison . This was due to the strategic location near the border to Gascony , which was English ruled in the Hundred Years War . Elected magistrates, who were responsible for order and justice, and the Bailli, the representative of the Viscount, administered the village. In the 1385 census of the Béarn, 41 households were counted. Thèze was the seat of an archpriesthood of the diocese of Lescar and a notary's office. When the territories were reorganized at the beginning of the French Revolution , Thèze became the capital of a canton in the Basses-Pyrénées department.

Parish Church of Saint-Pierre
  • Parish church dedicated to the Apostle Peter . It was built at the end of the 11th or beginning of the 12th century and half of it was given to the diocese of Lescar. From the building of the 12th century, the narrow arched windows and lower sections of the semicircular apse made of sandstone as well as most of the eastern facade still exist . Extensive changes were made in the late 15th or early 16th centuries as a result of the partial demolition of the north aisle , the upper parts of the main nave and the apse. This construction phase to the capitals of the columns at the entrance of the choir with its flat foliage ornaments and the glare pillars on the side arcades to recognize the nave. The square bell tower above the entrance porch was probably not completed before the end of the 16th century. Rectangular windows on the south side illuminate the interior, in which a spiral staircase leads to the upper floors of the tower. A tourelle is built on the tower, which is supported by buttresses . The entrance porch is equipped with a ribbed vault and hides a richly decorated entrance portal from the 16th century in the Renaissance style . The sacristy was built in 1860, the south aisle in 1866. The timbers of the bell tower were repaired in 1902. A recent restoration has resulted in the loss of the interior decoration of the choir. The parish church has been classified as a monument historique since January 17, 1997 . On an outer wall of the church there is a statue of St. Peter as a man with a strong stature, with a beard and a great abundance of hair. He stands upright with the keys of the salvation of souls and of paradise in both hands and with a rooster at his feet. A side altar of the church with a tabernacle made of oak or chestnut wood dates from the 17th century and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. A monstrance appears on the door of the tabernacle , on the sides Saints Luke and Mark as bas-reliefs . Two columns painted to imitate marble and a tail gable frame the altarpiece . On the gable, God the Father appears as a high relief in a rich ornamentation of silver-plated clouds. Another side altar of the church is oriented towards a 1.90 m × 1.35 m oil painting. It dates from the 19th century and illustrates the motif of the Sacred Heart of Jesus . The altar consists of a hollow sarcophagus with reliefs made of cast and gilded plaster. His wooden tabernacle, which was made between 1720 and 1740, depicts Jesus as Ecce homo in a relief . Four serpentine columns frame the front and the sides. Many other fixtures and fittings in the church date from the 17th to 20th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.

In the 18th century it was extended with a corner pavilion , which was equipped with a decorative roof gable. Mascarons look down from the tops of the arched windows of the corner pavilion. The building has two floors with large windows that are higher on the first floor than on the ground floor. The entrance is decorated with a blown gable . Above it is a small semicircular gable with two upright lions on its sides. The castle was bought by the municipality in 1959 and the town hall is now located here.
