history

Hewn flint stones , polished stones and two stone vases from the early Bronze Age were found in a tumulus and are evidence of settlement in prehistory . As in all other communities in the water-rich catchment area of the Adours, the people in Balansun started farming early.

In 1205 Balansun was mentioned with its current name in the books of Navarrenx , in the 13th century as Balensun in the fors de Béarn , a collection of official texts from the vicegranate of Béarn. Further forms of the place name in the scriptures were subsequently: Balensu (notary of Pardies , 1343), Valenssun ( census in Béarn, 1385), Valencin (4th book by Jean Froissart , 14th century), Balanssun ( Reformation of Béarn, 1536). The municipality is registered as Balensun on the map of Cassini in 1750 , during the French Revolution in 1793 as Balenzun , and in 1801 as Balensun or Balansun .

In the Middle Ages, the village was a stage for pilgrims on the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela and had a pilgrim hostel called Notre-Dame-de-Chaustins . The community had a special connection with Spain. In the Middle Ages, one of the descendants of the feudal lords of Balansun served the King of Castile . Another time in another time Jan de Balansun, persecuted in the Huguenot Wars , found refuge in Spain.

The Salzweg led through the community and gave the economy a boost. It experienced a heyday especially in the 17th century with the settlement of potters and glassblowers . In the 18th century, the municipality was characterized by the fact that Friquet de Balansun, feudal lord of the smallest fief in the country, acquired access to the chambers of Béarn.
