history

Bésingrand was first mentioned in connection with the local church as Sent Jacme de Besingran in 1344 . Further toponyms were subsequently Vesii-Gran (1349, notary of Pardies), Besii-Gran (1385, census of Béarn) and Vesingran (1546, Reformation in Béarn). On the map of Cassini 1750, the municipality is registered as Besingrand . During the French Revolution in 1793, Bésingrand is listed as Bezingrand , and eight years later as Besingrand as well as Bésingrand during the French Consulate .

In the census of 1385, 25 households were counted and it was noted that the village is in the Bailliage of Lagor and Pardies. Paul Raymond, archivist and historian of the 19th century, noted that from 1343 a ferry was in operation across the Gave near Bésingrand. The crossing was used by pilgrims on the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela to continue their way on the left bank of the Gave. Bésingrand was inevitably a stage on the pilgrimage. In 1431 the residents made an agreement with the ferryman. They worked for him for a day every year or gave him the corresponding value in the form of grain. In return, the ferryman undertook to buy the wood locally if he needed a new boat.

Bésingrand had a feudal lordship that was exercised by the Momas family in the 17th century and a lay monastery that was suffrage of the Viscount of Béarn.

In 1760, a flood of the Gave destroyed half of the village, which was subsequently rebuilt.

Population development

After the population increased to just over 100 in the 19th century, the number had dropped to roughly half by the 1960s. Due to the economic development of the chemical industry, the population more than doubled up to the 1990s, before it has since declined again.

Attractions

  • Parish church, dedicated to James the Elder , built after the destruction of the first church during the floods of 1760. Its furnishings range between ancient and modern art. A statue of the patron saint in the choir , above the door to the sacristy , commemorates the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. His cloak is adorned with two pilgrim shells and in his hand he carries a pilgrim staff with a drinking bottle attached.

Economy and Infrastructure

To the west of Bésingrand extends the industrial area of Noguères-Pardies, which was created in the 1960s in the course of natural gas production near Lacq . Although the parish owns a relatively small part of its total area of 140 hectares, it has a major impact on employment and income for the small parish. Several companies produce fine chemicals such as B. acetylene and acetic acid . However, the imminent exhaustion of gas reserves is forcing companies to undertake a certain realignment.

Bésingrand is located in the AOC area of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally made semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk.
