Castillon (or even unofficially Castillon-de-Lembeye ) is a French municipality with 69 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Terres des Luys et Coteaux du Vic-Bilh (until 2015: canton of Lembeye ).
geography
Castillon is located about 40 kilometers northeast of Pau in the Vic-Bilh region in the historic province of Béarn on the northeastern edge of the department.

Castillon lies in the catchment area of the Adour River and is crossed by one of its tributaries, the Lées , and one of its tributaries, the Ruisseau de l'Engalinette. In the eastern part of the municipality, two tributaries of the Larcis , the Lisau and the Ruisseau de Sourvayet, flow through the municipality.
history
Finds of polished axes and remains of bronze tools suggest that the area on the hill between the Lées and Lisau valleys was settled in prehistory . An important castle on a motte was built on this site in the 11th or 12th centuries . Throughout the Middle Ages , the community was the scene of numerous disputes over the manor .

In the census of 1385, 22 households were counted in Castillon and it was noted that the village was part of the Bailliage of Lembeye . The fief was a vassal of the Viscount of Bearn.
Population development
After highs of over 750 inhabitants in the 1830s and 1850s, the number fell by a total of around three quarters during short growth phases by the turn of the millennium. Since then, the number has remained at the level between 50 and 70 inhabitants.

Attractions
- Local church dedicated to the apostle Simon Peter . It is a small church whose beginnings go back to the 14th century in the inner courtyard of the medieval castle. Extensive renovations were carried out in the second half of the 19th century. The single nave nave is large enough to accommodate the community. As with many churches in the Béarn, it has a bell gable on the west facade. The altarpiece , kept in a simple white, has the shape of a building with arcades on both sides of an entrance portal that protrudes a little. His archivolts rest on four Corinthian pillars and his eyelash is crowned with a cross. The door of the portal is also the door of the tabernacle . Four small towers and a large tower with pointed helmets tower over the "building".
Economy and Infrastructure
Agriculture, especially viticulture, is still the most important economic factor today. Castillon is located in the AOC zones of the Béarn , Madiran and Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh wine-growing regions .

Sports
Fishing is possible on the seven hectare Lac de Castillon. The lake has a population of carp, roach, rudd, perch, pikeperch, and catfish. A 1.5 km long walk also leads around the lake.
