Burosse-Mendousse lies in the catchment area of the Adour River . One of its tributaries, called the Grand Lées here , marks the western municipal boundary to Taron-Sadirac-Vielleave. Tributaries of the Lées, Ruisseau de Culay, Ruisseau Le Cayas and Ruisseau Le Baoulac, flow through the territory of the municipality.

history

The naming of the two districts suggests settlement in the Bronze Age or Iron Age . The endings -ossum and -ossa come from the language of the population before the Gallic War in the years 58 to 51/50 BC. Nevertheless, the discovery of a bronze statuette depicting the Roman god Mercury shows a settlement in Gallo-Roman times.

Mentions Burosse were among the forms Burossium in 1312 in the records of the Vicomté of Béarn, Buroose in 1402 at a census in Béarn and Burossa in 1540 in a manuscript collection of Bearn. Mendousse were mentioned in the scriptures under the forms Mendaosse (1286, documents of the Viscount of Béarn), Mendeossa (13th century, fors de Béarn (manuscript from the 14th century)), Bendaosse (1323, documents of the Viscount of Béarn), Mendeosse (1385, census in the Béarn) and Mendosa (1538, manuscript collection of the Béarn). On the map of Cassini 1750, the two communities Burosse and Mendousse are drawn with their current names.

In the census of 1385, three households were counted in Burosse and it was noted that the village is in the Bailliage of Lembeye .

The unification of the municipalities of Burosse and Mendousse on June 27, 1842 was carried out by order of King Louis-Philippe I.

Population development

After reaching a peak of over 300 inhabitants in the mid-19th century, the number has declined by a total of more than 80% during brief periods of stabilization in the 1880s, in the 1920s and at the end of the 1970s.

Attractions

  • Church dedicated to King Ludwig IX. of France, called Louis the Saint or Prud'homme . After the unification of the two parishes, the residents decided to build a new church for the newly formed parish and to tear down the previous local churches beforehand in order to obtain building materials for the new building. A stone in the new church, dated 1261, probably comes from the former church in Burosse and thus suggests the possible age of this original church. The new slate-roofed building was constructed between 1884 and 1887 and consists of a nave with a nave and is closed off with a bell tower on the west side. Both entrances come from the original churches. One of these Romanesque entrance portals is a round arch made of natural stone with two vaults that are adorned with rows of small cylinders , called billettes . Apart from two large modern oil paintings , the simple interior has only one way of the cross . The 14 stations are shown in small pictures, each framed in the form of a chapel with a cross at the top. The altar is a stone coffin that was discovered in the cemetery in the 19th century. It probably dates from the 12th or 13th century. However, there are no records that could provide information about the history and origin.
  • Burosse Castle. The Marquis de Gramont owned a manor on this site in the 13th century. In 1540 the castle belonged to the Ferrand family and from 1650 until the French Revolution to the Lasalles. The current building was built in its origins at the beginning of the 17th century and redesigned in the 18th and 20th centuries.
