history

In the Middle Ages the village developed around a motte and a Romanesque church. It was mentioned in the scriptures in 1232 under the name Milos , and in 1513 under the name Mielos . The name comes from the Basque mil , which means "rounded hill". This is surprising because Mialos lies in a basin surrounded by hills. Before the reorganization of the territories at the beginning of the French Revolution , Mialos was part of the subdistrict of Saint-Sever in the Landes.

Population development

After a peak in the number of inhabitants of around 380 in the second half of the 19th century, the number fell to 95 inhabitants during short periods of recovery by the turn of the millennium, before a slight increase to over 100 began.

Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to Martin of Tours . The origins of the church with a single nave go back to the High Middle Ages . It was redesigned in the 15th or 16th century. The entrance, whose arch rests on corner capitals , also dates from this period . A sculpture can be seen next to the door showing a man holding a cord pressed in his mouth, a symbolism that still remains a mystery today. The church was rebuilt again in the 19th and 20th centuries. Inside it hides an altarpiece with a tabernacle from the end of the 17th century. The decor is enhanced by a painting by the painter Chavauty from 1846, which depicts Christ crucified with Mary and St. John at his side. Other items of equipment date from the 18th and 19th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.
