history

There is a theory that the origins of the village go back to ancient times . The name would refer to old walls of a castle. Another theory mentions the existence of a 7th century house of worship on Testamale, a hill west of the center of today's parish. Richtrudis was the wife of Adalbald von Ostrevant , a Frankish nobleman at the court of the Merovingian king Dagobert I , who is said to have been murdered by his wife's family. Richtrudis is said to have converted to Christianity and built this holy place, of which there are no traces today.

In the 1385 census of the Béarn, 40 households were counted in Pardies-Piétat. The village belonged to the Bailliage of Pau.

In the early modern period there was a large settlement of cagots in Pardies-Piétat, but they were relatively well integrated into the community. This was an exception, because the Cagots were a group of people who were discriminated against in Spain and France from the 13th to well into the 19th century for reasons that are still unknown and largely excluded from social life. It is also known that until recently the parish area was populated by packs of wolves.

Toponyms and mentions of Pardies-Piétat were:

  • Bardinœ (12th century, copy book of the Abbey of Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre ),
  • Pardies de Lissarre (1385, census of the Béarn, sheet 54),
  • Pardies de Lixarra (1450, regulations of the Supreme Court of Béarn),
  • Pardiees de Lixarre and la seigneurie de Pardees (1535 and 1675, respectively, reformation de Béarn , manuscript collection from the 16th to 18th centuries),

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint-Michel
  • Parish church dedicated to the Archangel Michael . During the Huguenot Wars , the church was set on fire by Protestant troops in 1563 . After it was repaired, the architect Dominique Gratiaa proposed a project in 1827 with the aim of extending the nave and building a bell tower . This work was carried out from 1828 to 1829 by the entrepreneur Carrère-Moncla. In 1886, according to plans by the architect Félix Claracq, a completely new building in the neo-Romanesque style was tackled, whereby the bell tower from 1828 was retained. The work could probably be completed in 1893, a date on which 24 glass windows were also installed, the work of the Bordelais glass painter Gustave Pierre Dagrant . The gable facade is now flanked on the north side by a tourelle with internal stairs. The nave with a main and two side aisles has a ribbed vault with a length of five bays . The naves are separated by arched arcades.
Notre-Dame de Piétat chapel
  • Chapel dedicated to Mary, Mother of God. There are numerous legends about the origins of the chapel. Tales convey the existence of a former chapel from the 7th century not far from today's chapel, which is said to have been destroyed in the Huguenot Wars. Another legend has it that Mary appeared to a drover in a time of calamity. Another legend wants to know that Mary meant the place where the chapel was built to a young goatherd by making a hawthorn bloom in the middle of winter. It is known that the chapel was built in 1661 on a hill west of the center of the parish. It quickly became a destination for pilgrimages , so that the simple structure was considered too small. Therefore, enlargements were made several times in the 18th century. The French Revolution stopped the flow of pilgrims and the chapel slowly began to crumble. Large-scale restoration began in 1849, interrupted in 1857 and resumed in 1870. The central nave was raised and the aisles lengthened. The sanctuary was completely rebuilt from 1874 to 1885. Further important restorations took place in 1954 after a decline in pilgrimages in the first half of the 20th century. Today's church has a facade that is framed by two bell towers. The nave has a length of five bays with arched arcades and a ribbed vault. Semicircular side chapels on each side form a transept. A stained glass window of the glass painter Jules-Pierre Mauméjean from Pau decorates the choir , which also houses a Madonna and Child in polychrome plaster can be seen, which probably dates from the 18th century. In 1980 an earthquake damaged the chapel so that it was closed for a few years.
  • Castle of Pardies-Piétat. It is a larger building from the early 18th century, made of local stone and covered with slate . A risalit with a hipped roof flanks the main facade, as does a round tourelle with an internal spiral staircase , a characteristic feature of aristocratic residences since the 15th century. The walls of the property are different. While the residential wing is plastered, the Tourelle has exposed brickwork . It is believed that this is due to the various remodeling works carried out over the centuries.
