Richtrudis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richtrudis , also Rictrudis , (* around 614, † 687 , according to other sources on May 12, 688 ) was a saint and abbess of the Marchiennes monastery near Lille .

Richtrudis was born in Gascony to pagan parents. Her father's name was Ernold, her mother Lichia. Richtrudis was instructed in Christian doctrine by Bishop Amandus of Maastricht , who had been expelled from the court of the Merovingian king Dagobert II . She married Adalbald , a Frankish nobleman at the Dagobert II court, and had three daughters, Adalsind , Chlotsind , Eusebia and a son, Maurontus , with her husband . Her children are venerated as saints in France, just like herself and her husband. After her husband was, according to legend, murdered by her own relatives, Richtrudis refused to re-marry the king or, according to other traditions, to marry the king. Instead Richtrudis went with her three daughters to the monastery of Marchiennes near Lille, where she took over the management as abbess. In spiritual matters she continued to receive support from Amandus of Maastricht. Her son also entered the monastery and became abbot of Breuil-sur-Lys near Douai . Richtrudis was buried in the monastery after her death. The inscription virtutis ager, pietatis imago (a field of virtue and an image of piety) was inscribed on her tombstone . After her death, numerous miracles are said to have occurred at her grave, which were renewed with her relics in various translations.

The bones of St. Richtrudis were brought to Paris, but were lost in the course of the French Revolution in 1793. According to other sources, parts of their relics are said to be kept in Douay. May 12th is the feast day of the holy Richtrudis, alternatively February 7th . In places that venerate the holy Richtrudis as patroness, their festival was celebrated on August 2nd and October 29th .
