Labastide-Monréjeau lies in the catchment area of the Adour River . The Ruisseau Laulouze, a tributary of the Gave de Pau , flows together with one of its tributaries, the Habernet, through the territory of the municipality.

history

Barrows and, above all, the discovery of a hand ax , a tool from the Neolithic Age , are evidence of the early occupation of the municipality by people. At the beginning of the era, one of the largest Roman military camps in what is now southwestern France was built on the territory of the municipality . Its surface of around ten hectares offered space for 20,000 to 30,000 people, protected by a 15 m high ring wall. The dating can be done using the objects found on the area, a millstone and pottery shards.

In 1350 the village was built as a bastide to monitor the Gavetal and the salt road that ran below the village. This location contributed to the prosperity of the community and explains its relative size at that time. In the 1385 census in Béarn, 37 households were recorded in Labastide-Monréjeau and it was noted that the place belonged to the Bailliage of Pau. The households of pastors, craftsmen and doctors were recorded. In the following years Labastide-Monréjeau was the headquarters of the notary's office in a district that included around a dozen of the surrounding communities. At the end of the 18th century the bastide was abandoned and the town center was moved away from the thoroughfares to the foot of the wooded hill above the Gavetal.

Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to the apostle John . It was built in the 16th century, surrounded by the cemetery. Its long building houses a nave , its roof and the pyramid roof of the bell tower's helm is covered with slate , as in most churches in the region . In 1866, restoration and enlargement work was carried out according to plans by the architect Henri d'Arnaudat. A statue of Mary , mother of Jesus Christ , is placed on an altar in the church dedicated to her. The work corresponds exactly to the iconography issued in the 19th century after the Marian apparitions in Lourdes . She wears a white coat and a white dress with a blue belt. With her hands closed in prayer, her face turned slightly to heaven, she wears a rosary that hangs down from her right forearm to her leg. The only deviation from the model of Mary of Lourdes is the crown with gemstones, which was added later. A painting is hung on a wall in the interior, depicting a scene with Mary with baby Jesus and John the Baptist . It shows Maria sitting with a gentle look at her child, which she is holding on her knees. John at her side also looks at Jesus and touches his leg. The scene is bathed in a semi-darkness with a background of plants and rocks. A small plaque on the lower edge of the frame indicates that the painting is a gift from the Emperor Napoleon . As a counterpart, another mural shows St. Jacob with his traditional attributes , the habit of a monk with a cloak, a long walking stick with a cross on top with a canteen, and a necklace with clam shells. He wears a halo and stands barefoot in a wild landscape with his left hand on his heart. The picture is a gift from Mr. Balague in 1870, as indicated by a small plaque on the lower edge of the frame. The large stone, hemispherical baptismal font of the church is kept simple, only decorated with a slight protrusion on the upper edge. The basin rests on a round foot with an octagonal base, which stands on a gray square base. The holy water is covered with a conical metal hood with a cross at the top.
