history
Paul Raymond, archivist and historian of the 19th century, noted the first mention of Arricau in the 12th century in Pierre de Marca's book Histoire de Béarn . Bordes was already in the 11th century as Bordas in the cartulary of Lescar mentioned. A census in 1385 counted 18 households in Aricau and 12 households in Bordes, and it was noted that the villages are in the Bailliage of Lembeye .
The feudal lordship in Arricau-Bordes is one of the oldest in the Vic-Bilh region. The feudal lords of Arricau established themselves very early on the flank of a ridge between the Lées and Liseau valleys. They owned the area until the French Revolution and produced high quality wines, Madiran (red) and Pacherenc (white). Both wines are still grown today as Madiran AOC and Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh AOC.
In 1869 the municipalities of Arricau and Bordes merged to form today's municipality.
Population development
Less than a third of the highest number of inhabitants at the end of the 19th century has remained since the 1970s. However, the trend has since stopped and the number remains more or less stable.

Attractions
- Castle of Arricau. Built on a rocky promontory above the Lées valley, the castle is considered one of the most beautiful des Béarn. The original structure was erected on a mound in the 13th century. Around 1570, Jean d'Arricou, clerk to the King of Navarre , converted to Protestantism . Through the confiscation of church property, he was able to finance the reconstruction of the castle, which the family held until the eve of the French Revolution. The date 1583, carved into the lintel of the entrance gate, attests to the completion. In the course of this construction work, a dovecote was erected below the castle , as evidenced by the date "1572" carved over the lintel of the low door. The height of the round structure is 3.50 m and there are more than 410 cuboid niches for the pigeons. Behind the entrance on the east side of the castle one arrives at the so-called “guard yard”, from which one arrives at all other residential buildings. It is delimited by a smaller residential wing, called Saint-Michel , the main building Saint-Jacques and the octagonal tower that overlooks the palace complex. In earlier times there was another courtyard, where the foundations of the former Saint-Martin castle chapel were found during excavations. The existence of the chapel was first mentioned in 1674 and last in 1858. On the south side there is an outbuilding, flanked by a tower that was probably built in the 19th century.
- Church Saint-Jean-Baptiste , dedicated to John the Baptist . In the place of today's church there was probably a simple local church in Romanesque style as early as the 11th century . It was part of a donation to the Bishop of Lescar. The building was probably rebuilt after the Huguenot Wars in the 16th century and largely redesigned around 1870. All that remains of the original structure is the semicircular apse and a Christ monogram on the now locked door on the north side. Inside the church there is an iron crucifix . The peculiarity of the Latin cross are the ends, which are worked out in the shape of scallops . They point to the importance of the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela , one of which also passes nearby.
- Bordes Castle. The census of 1385 confirmed the liege lord von Bordes, but a seat of power was not mentioned. In fact, the current building dates from the late 17th century and was expanded in the following century. On the verge of the Battle of Toulouse (1814) , the castle found itself between Napoleonic troops under the command of Maréchal Soult and a coalition army from the United Kingdom and Spain under Field Marshal Wellington .
- Castle of Lahitolle. The feudal lordship of La Fitola was documented in 1538, which is also the time of the construction of the castle on a strategically favorable place on a hill above the Liseautal. After it changed hands several times, it was rebuilt in the years 1777 to 1778 by Daniel de Périer, lawyer in Parliament , as can be seen from the years of the inscription at the foot of the stairs and the anchors on the facade.
