Sendets Town Hall

Sendets is a French commune with 1,007 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Pays de Morlaàs et du Montanérès (until 2015: canton of Morlaàs ).

The name in the Gascognischen language is Sendèts .

The residents are called Sendetsois and Sendetsoises .

Sendets is about 10 km to the east and thus in the urban catchment area of Pau in the historic province of Béarn .

history

Settlement of the municipality goes back to the Iron Age , as evidenced by a military camp and a moth that was built on a prehistoric barrow . In 1385 the village belonged to the Bailliage of Pau and had eleven houses. For a long time Sendets was under the Commandery of the Order of Malta of Caubin and Morlaàs . In the 16th century the village belonged to the Baronate of Coarraze and the landlord had a seat in the Béarn Estates . In 1718 the manor was sold to Raymond de Perpignan. Sendets became a parish during the French Revolution . In 1972 Sendets and the municipalities of Lée and Ousse were merged with Idron, and in 2000 Sendets and Ousse became independent again.

Population development

After the beginning of the records, the community grew and its size reached a level of around 550 inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century, which was held approximately until the First World War . After the war a lower level of population of around 400 was maintained until the merger with Idron. After regaining independence, a phase of growth began that has lasted until today.

Sendets maintains since 1994 with Idron and Ousse a city partnership with Alfajarín in the autonomous region of Aragon in Spain.

  • Parish church, dedicated to the Assumption . It was built according to plans by the architect Jean-Marcellin-Sylvestre Dumoulou in 1853 north of the previous church, which was demolished at the same time. Access is via a porch on the west side, above which the bell tower rises. The nave offers space for a main aisle and two aisles. Thirteen stained glass windows are works by Mauméjean and the glass painter Pierre Arcencam from the years 1920 to 1925. Many other pieces of furniture date from the 18th and 19th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.

The Autoroute A64 , called La Pyrénéenne , also crosses the municipality, but without a direct exit to the village. The closest exit 11 is approx. 7 km away.
