Garlède-Mondebat is a French municipality with 222 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Terres des Luys et Coteaux du Vic-Bilh (until 2015: canton Thèze ).

Finds of shards from early history prove the early existence of residents in the area of ​​the municipality. In the later period she crossed a Roman road from Atura ( Aire-sur-l'Adour ) to Beneharnum ( Lescar ), which favored the settlement along this route.

The 1385 census counted twelve households in Garlède and eight in Mondebat. Mondebat belonged to the Bailliage of Pau at this time, while Garlède and Claracq formed a common parish. The landlord of Montdebat was dependent on the barons of Gabaston until 1603 , then connected to Lalonquette, before the Baronate of Montdebat was founded in 1658 in favor of Bernard de Caplane by decree of the French king, which included Montdebat and Lalonquette as well as Garlède. On June 25, 1844, Garlède and Mondebat merged to form the new municipality of Garlède-Mondebat.

Attractions

  • Church of Saint-Martin of Garlède-Mondebat, dedicated to Martin of Tours . The original, Romanesque long building was probably built in the 12th century. From this period only is the altar of sandstone left. A side aisle was added at the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century . The church was restored in the 19th century. Many of the church's furnishings date from the 12th to 19th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.
  • Mondebat Church, dedicated to the Apostle Andrew . It has many parallels to the Saint-Martin church . The original, Romanesque long building was also built in the 12th century.   • Garlède-Mondebat hill fort. It comes from the Gallo-Roman period and suggests that the area was settled during this period, especially since the municipality was crossed by a Roman road. Not far from the villa of Lalonquette, the hill fort could belong to an outbuilding, probably a water mill from the 4th century. Various mosaic fragments have been found at this point.
