In the 1385 census in Béarn, 40 households were recorded in Labastide-Cézéracq and it was noted that the place belonged to the Bailliage of Pau. In addition to the households of a pastor and a chaplain , Cagots were also counted, members of a group of people who were discriminated against in Spain and France from the 13th to well into the 19th century and who were largely excluded from social life. The basic rule of Saint-Aulaire de Cesserac family was established 1385th From the 18th to the end of the 19th century, the Rosary Brotherhood influenced the social life of the community.

Toponyms and mentions of Labastide-Cézéracq were:

coat of arms

Labastide-Cézéracq coat of arms

The coat of arms is divided into four fields and can be interpreted as follows.

The illustration above on the left shows the medieval moth of Labastide-Cézéracq, which has been mentioned in the scriptures since 1345, at a time when the village around the settlement was still called La Motte de Cesseracq . On today's maps, the site is marked as La Mouta . The two wheels on the top right and bottom left refer to the water mills that were operated on a canal next to the Gave de Pau between Lescar and Artix . They belonged to the landlord, who in return was entitled to part of the flour. The water mills are shown in the map by Cassini 1750, among others. The field at the bottom right shows the coat of arms of the Bearn.

Population development

After a peak of the population of 680 in the middle of the 19th century, the number fell by around half by the 1950s. In the 1960s there was a short growth phase with an increase to over 400, then a reduction to below 400 inhabitants in the 1970s and 1980s. Since the 1990s, the size of the community has grown steadily to over 500 inhabitants.

Attractions

  • Labastide-Cézéracq parish church, dedicated to the beheading of John the Baptist . The former church was enlarged from 1822 to 1823 and its bell tower was repaired, but at the end of the 19th century the previous church at the entrance to the cemetery appeared to be too small. It was therefore decided, on the initiative of Pastor Félix-Frédéric Capdevielle, to build a new building around 100 m from the old church. According to the plans of the architect Félix Claracq from Pau, today's church was built on a plan in the shape of a Latin cross with a nave . Typical of the region is the bell tower above the entrance porch with a high polygonal tower spire covered with slate . The interior of the church has a false ribbed vault . The new parish church was consecrated in 1894 by Monsignor Jauffret . In 1923 the floor of the choir was laid out with marble .
  • Pley Castle. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century on the remains of an earlier castle.
