history
Paul Raymond, archivist and historian of the 19th century, noted the census in 1385. In Barinque 15 households were counted and it was noted that the settlement was in the Bailliage of Pau. Further mentions are as Barinco (Census, 1402), Barincquo ( Reformation of Béarn, 1538), Barinquo (1542) and Barincou (Reformation of Béarn, 1676). There was a lay monastery in Barinque as a vassal of the Viscount of Béarn.
Since the Middle Ages , Barinque was part of the Baronate of Navailles . The first baron known by name, Guilléu Arnaud, was also feudal lord of Barinque in the 12th century. In the 16th century there was another feudal lord in addition to the Baron von Navailles, François Navarro, feudal lord of Gayon . In 1542 the two feudal lords gave the community 117 arpents for an annual fee. The residents were able to manage themselves largely independently, but under the control of a guard and three magistrates. The relatively quiet period ended with the advent of the Reformation. Jeanne d'Albret , Queen of Navarre , wanted to force the Reformation across Béarn. Parts of their population resisted and took up arms. After the victory of the Protestant troops in 1569, all the defeated were asked to convert or to leave the country with the loss of all their property. Many residents of Barinque, including the lord's family, decided to emigrate . The French King Louis XIII. united France with the Béarn in 1620 and restored the Catholic Church to the state before the persecution by Jeanne d'Albret. In the 18th century, other plagues awaited the people of Barinque and all of Béarns. In 1709 the harvests were so bad that a famine broke out. In 1775 the entire livestock died because the rinderpest had spread. The fields could not be tilled without cattle, which resulted in another famine.
Population development
After the peak in the middle of the 19th century with 653 inhabitants, the number fell by around 60% by the 1960s. Since then it has risen to the highest level again.

- Parish church dedicated to the Apostle Bartholomew . The church was first built in the Romanesque period , probably in the 12th century. The simple floor plan consisted of a nave with a closure on the east side in the form of a round apse . In 1570 a side aisle was added on the north side, around 1779 another aisle on the south side together with the entrance, the keystone of which bears the year 1779 as an inscription. Inside, in addition to the glass windows that embellish the choir , there are many other objects from the 17th to 19th centuries that are registered as national cultural assets.
