history

The oldest settlement of Castétis dates back to Roman times, as evidenced by finds of everyday objects , clay dishes and shards of amphorae . The village developed in the center of a ring wall with surrounding ditches that was built in the first century BC. After the Gallic War on a Roman road and the traces of which are still visible today.

Before the historic province of Béarn was established, Castétis was the westernmost bastion of the Viscount of Bearn opposite the neighboring Viscount of Dax. For this reason, the buildings of the village had to be built in the sense of defensibility in uncertain times and territorial conflicts.

In the documents of the Vicomté of Béarn Castétis is mentioned for the first time in 1304 in the form of Castetiis . The name is a Gascognic derivation of the Latin word castellum ( German  castle ) together with the derivation tiis of the Latin word finis ( German  border ) and expresses the geographical location on the border between two viscounts. In 1385 Castétis belonged to the Commandery of the Order of St. John of Caubin and Morlaàs and a remarkable 68 households were recorded in the census .

Further toponyms and mentions of Castéra followed

  • Casteg-Tiis (1344, notaries of Pardies ),
  • Castethiis (1369, documents from Béarn),
  • Casteg-Thiis (1385, census),
  • Castetys (1399, contracts of the Bearner Notary Gots) and

Saint-Laurent local church
  • Local church dedicated to Lawrence of Rome . The original church was destroyed by Protestant troops in the Third Huguenot War in 1569 . The reconstruction took place at the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th century. The current apse shows traces of this building activity, especially the late Gothic twin windows indicate this construction period. Between 1844 and 1846 the nave and apse were restored and partially rebuilt . The two chapels were added around 1849, the bell tower was probably built from 1851 to 1852, and the walls of the two chapels were raised in 1866. It is possible that the vault of the nave and the choir was given the trompe-l'oeil at this time , giving the impression of vaulted ribs .
  • Local church dedicated to John the Baptist . The original church belonged to the Commandery of the Order of St. John of Caubin and Morlaàs. Pastor Victor Peyret-Cauhapé initiated the reconstruction of the church between 1901 and 1906, possibly using the walls of the old nave. The painting on the walls and vaults of the nave can be attributed to the Bayonne painter Louis Decrept , who worked in many other churches in the canton. The eight glass windows are works from 1830 by the glass painter Louis-Victor Gesta from Toulouse .
  • Castle of "the three poets". Van Candau Castle was built in the 17th century. The rectangular, three-storey house is flanked by two round towers , and a polygonal tower protrudes from the facade. The new name is a tribute to three great French poets, Alphonse de Lamartine , Alfred de Vigny and Francis Jammes , who stayed there for a while.
