geography

Agnos is about five kilometers south of Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the valley of the Gave d'Aspe on the edge of two large mixed forests. Agnos is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the north, Bidos in the northeast, Gurmençon in the east, Asasp-Arros in the south and Ance in the west.

Agnos lies in the catchment area of the Adour river and is crossed by the Mielle , a stream that flows further downstream into the Gave d'Oloron .

history

The only evidence of prehistoric habitation is a cave with worked bones and bones of sheep and goats that have now disappeared. Two kilometers to the southwest was an ancient camp called "Caesar's camp". An earth wall can be seen that encompasses an almost circular platform approx. 150 m in diameter. Finds of tools nearby suggest pre-Roman settlement.

In the Middle Ages, the settlement is first mentioned in the fors de Béarn in 1364. It had 17 households, around 1699 55 households. The feudal lords of Agnos have been occupied since 1385. Their lordly seat was probably on a hill below the present-day castle.

Over the centuries that followed, the economy specialized in the management of forests and the production of charcoal. Special donkeys were bred for the transport to Oloron-Sainte-Marie, which carried the charcoal in caravans of several dozen animals.

On February 1, 1973, the municipality merged with the neighboring municipality of Gurmençon to form the municipality of Val-du-Gave-d'Aspe . On January 1, 1983, the merger was revised.
