James McAuley
James Phillip McAuley (born October 12, 1917 in Lakemba , Sydney , Australia , † October 15, 1976 in Hobart , Australia) was an Australian poet , journalist and literary critic.
McAuley was born in Lakemba, a suburb of Sydney . He attended the University of Sydney. In 1943 McAuley became a lieutenant in the Australian Army and served in Melbourne and Canberra . After the war he spent some time in New Guinea , which he described as his second "spiritual home".
McAuley was best known for the Ern Malley forgery in 1944 . With his friend Harold Stewart he wrote sixteen nonsense poems in a pseudo-experimental modernist style, which he sent under the name "Ethel Malley" (the fictional sister of Ern Malley) to the young editor of the literary magazine "Angry Penguins", Max Harris . Harris ignorantly published the poems in a special edition of his magazine. A few weeks later the dizziness flew through a report in the Sunday Sun on.
McAuley also wrote the poem “Captain Quiros” about Pedro Fernández de Quirós , in which this Spanish conquistador is portrayed as a martyr who wanted to civilize the Pacific region.
In 1956 he founded the literary and cultural magazine Quadrant with Richard Krygier and was the editor until 1963. From 1961 he was an English lecturer at the University of Tasmania .
