action
Willie T. Stokes works as a department store Santa Claus every year , but he's not at all good at his job: Willie drinks excessively, curses, and curses the children who sit on his lap. But that's not all: together with his diminutive buddy Marcus, he robs the department stores in which he works. However, Willie's life begins to change when he meets a little boy named Thurman Merman, who lives alone with his senile grandmother and who desperately believes in Santa Claus. Willie stays with Thurman and his grandma without further ado. There is also the devious department store detective Gin, who has learned of a planned robbery by the duo and is using it to blackmail the two men, as well as the attractive Sue, who loves Santa Claus and falls in love with Willie.
Thurman slowly teaches Willie the real meaning of Christmas , while Willie teaches him how to - literally - get through life. Willie's partner Marcus is not at all enthusiastic about this change.
Department store detective Gin finds out that Willie and Marcus have robbed a department store every Christmas Eve for seven years and blackmailed them for half of the loot. Marcus then gets Gin out of the way and also wants to kill Willie, but is prevented from doing so by the arriving police. Willie manages to escape at first, but is shot and arrested in front of Thurman's house with his Christmas present in hand. Despite these adverse circumstances, Thurman receives Willie's gift.
A few months later, Thurman receives a letter from Willie informing him that he is fine and that he will soon be released. Since Willie has made a full confession and has agreed to cooperate with the police, his sentence has been reduced accordingly.

In his review for the Boston Globe , Tyr Burr regretted the too small roles of Bernie Mac and Lauren Graham, but explicitly praised the acting performance of Billy Bob Thornton.
Roger Ebert praised the movie Bad Santa in his column for the Chicago Sun Times as "uncompromising" and "funny".
The lexicon of international films wrote: "What appears on the surface as a rude and sordid anti-Christmas film develops into a tongue-in-cheek anarcho-comedy with satirical and melodramatic accents, thanks to excellent actors and the pointed script."
TV Spielfilm pointed the thumbs up, gave one of three possible points for claim, action, tension and eroticism and three points for humor and said: "A rough, respectless and taboo-free fun with nice nasty humor." Conclusion: " F ***! Christmas haters welcome. "
epd Film spoke of “one of the 'blackest' Christmas films of all time - and not just because, as experts have counted, Santa Claus Billy Bob Thornton says 'fuck' 146 times and still says 'shit' half as often”. It also said: “BAD SANTA is a parody of all those films that celebrated the festival as redemption and purification, a journey into the heart of Christmas darkness. Films about Santa Claus are, even more than Christmas films in general, an all-American genre, an icon of popular culture: Coca-Cola has been advertising with the cute Mr since the thirties, and shopping centers can no longer be imagined without him. […] BAD SANTA, produced by Joel and Ethan Coen, violates everything that is sacred to us at Christmas. That even includes the weather -Dean Martin sings 'Let it snow, let it snow' while Willie and his assistant stroll through hot Phoenix / Arizona. "
Kino.de stated : "If you feel like a hard-boiled contrast program to traditional Christmas entertainment, you are right with the pitch-black, profane satire by cult director Terry Zwigoff [...]." "Interesting" is the soundtrack compilation of this hotly debated beforehand Films, in which the parent company Disney was not too enthusiastic about the Miramax production, which mixed classical music and tried-and-tested Christmas carols. The cast with Thornton was of the opinion that he was perfect in the role of the "disgruntled misanthrope", one could not ask for a better one. "Thanks to the aggressive excess, there will always be a cult niche for this tab-free 'Christmas comedy'", it concluded.
