action

The film deals with the biblical story of the Patriarch Joseph .

Jacob , father of an extended family, finally has a child, Joseph, from his second wife. Both father and mother Rahel and the brothers are enthusiastic and celebrate the "child prodigy". As a sign of this, he also receives a coat woven by his mother, which identifies him as something special, no other brother has anything like it. While his older brothers tend the flock of sheep, Joseph learns from his father to read and write, including hieroglyphics . One day he dreams that the herd of wolves is attacked and the goat is torn down. He sounds the alarm, the brothers, who were woken up by Jacob and sent to work an hour earlier, are not very enthusiastic. Joseph manages to persuade his father to be allowed to tend the flock with his brothers one day. They take the opportunity to go swimming themselves. While Joseph is taking care of the herd alone, it is actually attacked by wolves and the buck is killed; the dream has come true.

In the next dream, Joseph sees the brethren's sheaves of wheat bowing to his own and the stars, sun and moon doing him their honor. Jakob tries to calm his children down, but they are very upset. At the next opportunity, Joseph is thrown into a hole in the ground and then sold to traders who sell him to Potifar , a high- ranking government official, at an Egyptian slave market . In this house it quickly becomes clear that Joseph is good at more than just cleaning the floor. He rises and gets more and more important tasks, while he meets both Potiphar's wife and Asenath. The former shows her interest in Joseph very clearly, while the latter does not want to betray his master. That is exactly what will be his undoing, since he is now being accused and convicted of the crime that he did not want to commit. Joseph arrives in prison and correctly interprets the dreams of the court cupbearer and the court baker ; his request that he be thought of is initially unheard. He now sits alone for a long time, a pomegranate tree grows in the cell under his care. Asenath is another glimmer of hope, she brings him food.

Potifar appears and takes Joseph out of prison because the Pharaoh has dreams that no one else can interpret. Through the gift of God, Joseph can point to the following seven good and seven bad years. At the same time, he advises building pantries to avoid a famine. Pharaoh was so impressed that he asked Joseph to do it; now there is no one in Egypt except Pharaoh who is more powerful than Joseph. During the seven good years, Joseph had pantries built, married Asenath and had two sons with her. The seven bad years also affect Canaan , home of Joseph's family. The brothers come wanting to buy grain. Joseph initially refuses to allow them, but then allows it on the condition that Benjamin, the youngest brother, also comes to Egypt and remains a hostage with him until his return. A great festival is celebrated on return; When the brothers want to leave again to take care of the family at home, Joseph discovers the cup in Benjamin's grain sack that Joseph had hidden there. To protect Benjamin, the brothers confess everything, including that it was wrong to sell Joseph. Thereupon Joseph reveals himself and is reconciled with the brothers. Jacob and the whole family are brought to Egypt to survive the famine here.
