Richard Herd (born September 26, 1932 in Boston , Massachusetts , † May 26, 2020 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

life and career

Herd suffered from osteomyelitis in his youth , which however could be cured with penicillin . He started acting in high school . He made his film debut in 1970 in Arnold Schwarzenegger 's first feature film Hercules in New York . From the mid-1970s his career as a television actor began, he played in Kojak - employment in Manhattan and detective Rockford - a call is enough . In the 1980s he had one of the leading roles in the series TJ Hooker and V - The extraterrestrial visitors come , through which he also gained greater fame in Germany. His other appearances included Simon & Simon , Knight Rider and Das A-Team . Herd played only a comparatively few roles in feature films . Among other things, he played supporting roles in the four-time Oscar- winning Die Unbrechlichen , in The China Syndrome , which was nominated for four Oscars, and in Sagittarius Benjamin, which was nominated for three Oscars . He was with a ticket for two and Trouble with Sergeant Bilko in two comedies alongside Steve Martin to see also in Clint Eastwood's drama Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and Jordan Peele Horror Get Out .

His acting work includes more than 150 film and television productions, most recently in 2019 in The Silent Natural .

In addition to his acting work, Herd also served as the Vice President of the Screen Actors Guild . He founded the Enterprise Blues Band with some other actors (including Casey Biggs ) , with whom he performed at Star Trek conventions . He won an Obie Award for his theatrical work, and he also worked as a producer of off-Broadway performances. Herd lived in Southern California with his wife, actress Patricia Herd . He died in May 2020 at the age of 87.

Richard Herd was often mistaken for his fellow actor Karl Malden, 20 years his senior, because of his physiognomy .
