Garry Emmanuel Shandling (born November 29, 1949 in Chicago , Illinois - † March 24, 2016 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American comedian and actor .

Life

Shandling grew up in Tucson , Arizona, USA . He attended Palo Verde High School and the University of Arizona . He initially studied electrical engineering , but later took his final exam in marketing . Shandling also studied creative writing for two semesters .

In his early career he wrote for television shows such as Sanford and Son (1972) and Welcome Back, Kotter (1975). After a serious car accident, Shandling made the decision to become a stand-up comedian during his recovery .

Between 1986 and 1990 he starred in the influential and critically acclaimed sitcom It's Garry Shandling's Show , in which he regularly broke the Fourth Wall and acted with the studio audience.

Garry Shandling turned down a 1992 NBC offer to take on the show Late Night with David Letterman , as he had just started The Larry Sanders Show .

Shandling died of a pulmonary embolism in March 2016 at the age of 66 .
