It's Garry Shandling's Show scenario was modeled on the main character 's life. Garry Shandling plays a neurotic, insecure stand-up comedian from Sherman Oaks who is single and looking for a relationship with a woman. His environment includes his best friend Nancy, his married friend Pete, his son Grant, his mother and his neighbor Leonard. In the course of the series he marries Phoebe Bass.
A defining element of the series was breaking the fourth wall and interacting with the studio audience. Celebrities also appeared again and again in guest roles, including the rock musician Tom Petty .
