Lifesavers ( Mixed Nuts , Lifesavers ) is a 1994 American comedy film directed by Nora Ephron .

action

The film "Lifesavers - The Lifesavers" takes place on a Christmas Eve.

Philip, Blanche Munchnik and Catherine O'Shaughnessy work for telephone counseling and give advice in difficult life situations. Above all, they are intended to provide emotional support for people at risk of suicide. The pastors receive u. a. Calls from women who are afraid of a serial killer known as a "beach strangler" who is leading a criminal track in the city at the time.

Catherine is a wallflower who does her pastoral work with the desire to win Philip over at some point.

Philip, the initiator of pastoral care, is eager to keep it alive against many adversities. At the moment the main problem is that the landlord is giving you the space at short notice. In all seriousness for his actions, he misses the affection of his colleague Catherine, he also has enough problems with his relationship. But Philips friend Susan ended the relationship on the phone that day. In particular, Philip tries to hide the landlord's termination from his employees.

Blanche Munchnik, an elderly widow with strict moral standards, works on the hotline more as a kind of sacred duty. Accordingly, she insists punctually on coming home on Christmas Eve. However, she initially gets stuck in the elevator unnoticed by the others.

A friend of Catherine calls her at the pastoral care and blocks the phone line with trivialities. Although the exact location of the office is to be kept secret from everyone, Catherine calls Gracie over to work to get the phone free. Gracie is with a loser named Felix, the main subject of their problems, because he considers himself a "wall artist", but is also the father of the baby who is about to arrive and has no income.

Meanwhile, Philip gives the transsexual Chris the address of the office in a weak moment, as his family mocked him and would like to spend Christmas without him. Chris comes to the office and only meets Gracie, the others - Philip, Catherine and Felix - follow shortly afterwards.

In an argument with Gracie, the very unstable Felix pulls out a gun and shoots around. He punctures the door with one shot and with it the landlord of the office, whose hand freezes on the doorbell. Everyone agrees that the dead should be "disposed of" without causing a stir. Gracie has the idea to disguise it as a Christmas tree, which is realized with a lot of skill, glue and parts of a real tree. When trying to bring the corpse to the beach promenade, the camouflage dissolves into its components. The arriving police increase Felix's despair, whereupon he tries to throw himself from a house. Philip saves him by pulling out all the stops of his pastoral skills.

A short time later, the police find out that the victim - the landlord - was the beach strangler, and Felix and Gracie are awarded the reward for their capture. The excitement causes Gracie to go into labor and she has the baby on Christmas Eve in the midst of the now greatly increased crowd of onlookers.

Thanks to his successful rescue of Felix in public, the death of the landlord and a share of the reward, the association can continue its work and Catherine and Philip finally find each other.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that there must be something about the collaboration between Steve Martin and Nora Ephron that is not working. You can't watch the film (“unwatchable”). The script is "choppy" and "unpolished"; it contains nothing that is even remotely funny ("There's nothing even remotely funny here.").

"Despite the star cast, a failed Christmas film that has neither convincing comedy nor credible emotions to offer."
