Lucky Numbers (Alternative title on TV: Lucky Numbers - A Weather Frog On The Astray ) is an American comedy film from 2000 . Directed by Nora Ephron and written by Adam Resnick .
The story is based on an actual fraud against the Pennsylvania state lottery in 1980, which - unlike in the film - did not have a happy ending.
action
Russ Richards works as a weather expert for a local television station in Harrisburg . He is investing in a company that deals in snowmobiles , which is in financial difficulties due to the particularly warm winter. This development drives him into debt and could damage his reputation as a weather expert.
Richards and his friend Gig, a nightclub owner, develop a plan to defraud the state lottery as a target. Crystal, who is friends with the presenter - who also has an affair with his boss Dick Simmons - acts as an accomplice. After the plan succeeds, the station boss of the local broadcaster, Dick Simmons - who claims half of the loot - and other confidants blackmail the perpetrators. Richards sarcastically remarks that once the debts have been paid, he will only be in debt.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of October 27, 2000 that the film tells a too comprehensive story with too little energy (“tells too much story at not enough energy”). Introducing the characters is taking too long. There are funny moments, but also sad moments and brutal scenes - so it is uncertain whether the film will be conceived as a comedy.
“A dignified staged, but all too indecisive between macabre humor, slapstick and adolescent jokes, a crook comedy whose dialogues lack the necessary esprit. Also disappointing in terms of acting. "
Awards
John Travolta received the Golden Raspberry for Worst Actor in 2001 for this film and for Battlefield Earth .
