Maria Bamford (born September 3, 1970 in Port Hueneme , California ) is an American comedian and voice actress .

Life

Bamford is the daughter of a US Navy - dermatologist and a therapist from Duluth , Minnesota , where she grew up. After Bates College (in Lewiston , Maine ), she studied at the University of Edinburgh (in Edinburgh , Scotland ) and the University of Minnesota -Minneapolis (in Minneapolis , Minnesota), where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in creative writing. When she was 19, she began stand-up appearances in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Stevie Ray's Comedy Cabaret. She then joined the comedian group The Improverts in Edinburgh .

She later moved to Los Angeles , where she always performs her stand-up program when she is not on tour. She is self-employed and was commissioned as a spokesperson for four different cartoon series in 2010 alone .

Maria Bamford has a sister, Sarah Bamford Seidelmann.

The 2016 television series Lady Dynamite , in which Bamford plays the lead role, is loosely based on her biography.
