Hey arnold! is an American animated series that was produced by the television station Nickelodeon from 1996 to 2004. There are a total of 100 episodes of the series about Arnold, his friend Gerald, his classmates and the boarding house roommates.

action

Nine year old Arnold lives with his grandparents Phil and Gertrude, who own a pension. He is in fourth grade and has many adventures with his best friend Gerald and the other children in the neighborhood. In some episodes of the show - this is a specialty - the eponymous character Arnold is only slightly involved in the story, and the episode revolves around a supporting character.

The setting is a very dilapidated American city: dirty apartment blocks, rubbish floating in the river and a generally shabby-looking environment. One topic that runs through all the other 100 from the first episode on is Helga's love for Arnold, which she tries vehemently to hide.

Characters

main characters

children

Arnold is the main character in the series. He lives with his grandparents who run a pension. They have taken the place of his parents, who long ago disappeared on a research trip. Arnold is characterized above all by his intelligence and a strong sense of justice.

Outwardly, its unusual head shape is particularly noticeable, which is why it is often (especially by Helga) called the "football skull". In addition, he usually wears a long checked shirt under a sweater, as well as his beloved hat, without which he suffers from an identity crisis. His best friend is Gerald.

Arnold's last name is never mentioned in the series. However, Arnold inventor Craig Bartlett advised fans that his last name was featured on the series on a regular basis. According to rumors, his name should be Shortman , which is confirmed in the second film, Jungle Film .

Helga G. Pataki : Her "trademark" are her huge misshapen eyebrows - and she is almost always very mean to Arnold, but only for appearance - actually she is immortally in love with Arnold, which she persistently hides. Her big secret comes out a few times, but luckily only a handful of people know it. In the movie for the series, she confesses it to Arnold.

Among them is Brainy, who desires Helga herself. Whenever she raves about Arnold, Brainy is nearby and breathes rattlingly. Her best friend Phoebe knows or at least suspects her secret. Patty thinks she knows because Arnold stood up for Helga. In order to play the female title role alongside Arnold in Romeo and Juliet , she had to reveal the secret to Lila, probably her greatest competitor for Arnold. After that, however, Lila left the role to Helga. In addition, the psychologist Dr. Bliss, to whom Helga had to go because she had knocked Brainy down in front of the headmaster's eyes.

Helga made a bizarre sculpture of Arnold in her wardrobe. She also wears a medallion with a picture of him. Helga lives with her father, the entrepreneur Bob Pataki, and her mother Miriam. Her father often confuses her with Olga, Helga's older, highly gifted sister. Bob lets Helga, who is intelligent but not outstanding at school, often enough feel how much more he thinks of Olga.

Gerald Johanssen is Arnold's best friend. It is characterized by a noticeably upturned head of hair. Gerald is (almost) always loyal to Arnold. He often has to worry about his little sister and big brother. He is also the “keeper” of numerous legends such as the story of the stair child. Gerald's father was in Vietnam .

Phoebe Heyerdahl is Helga's best friend. She is highly intelligent and very good-natured, which is why she is often too easily exploited by Helga. Often she also has to bail out her best friend.

Harold Berman is a very fat, but also very strong boy. He's not exactly overly intelligent and often clashes with Arnold. Harold also has a great passion for meat and a talent for butchering. Besides, he's also a Jew .

Rhonda Wellington Lloyd is the "fashion expert" in Arnold's class. Above all, she is characterized by arrogance due to her wealthy parents. She is often very mean and condescending, especially towards the “uncool”.

Stinky Peterson is a southern boy who lives with his parents on some kind of farm in town. Outwardly, it is mainly characterized by its size. Stinky suffers from slight inferiority complexes: he thinks he is not particularly good at anything. Oddly enough, everyone in his family is also called Stinky. Stinky is usually quite friendly, but is not exactly characterized by high intelligence.

Eugene Horowitz is the unlucky one. He often has downright grotesque accidents that make him hospital-ready. Nevertheless, Eugene has a tremendous optimism, coupled with a little naivety, which only gets him into more trouble. Most of his classmates prefer to stay away from Eugene in order not to have bad luck themselves. Only Arnold tries now and then to help him - rarely with success. He comments on almost every one of his accidents with “nothing happens”.

Sid is a boy with a flashy nose and a baseball cap. Like Gerald, he knows numerous “legends”, but they are always presented by Gerald. Sid gets along best with Stinky.

Brainy is a character on the series that not much is known about. Nevertheless, he plays a recurring role. Almost every time Helga starts to rave about Arnold, apparently undisturbed, Brainy, a constantly panting boy with glasses, appears out of nowhere. Helga then always puts him out of action with a strong slap in the face.

Purple is Arnold's great love, which Helga naturally dislikes. Lila likes Arnold, but is not in love with him. One day, Lila comes to school. At first the children don't like her because purple seems perfect; but then they learn that Lila lives with her father in a poor apartment in the shabbiest part of town, and they feel sorry for her. Since Lila's mother is never mentioned, it is believed that she passed away before Lila moved to Hillwood with her father. Lila is a friendly, nice and intelligent girl who is described by many as "perfect". As one of the very few people at all, she knows that Helga is in love with Arnold. Helga confessed this in order to be able to relieve her of the role of Julia. “Romeo and Juliet” was performed in the school theater, Arnold had the role of Romeo and Helga got hold of the opportunity to kiss her crush. Lila promised Helga that she would never tell Arnold anything about her feelings and has kept her word since then.

Adults

Grandpa Phil is Arnold's grandfather; but since Arnold's parents have been missing for a long time, he has become something of a father figure for him. Grandpa Phil runs the Sunset Arms pension together with his wife Gertie , where animals are allowed but no children. He is around 80 years old, but still very sprightly for his age. He also knows a lot of exciting stories, but many of them are made up.

Grandma Gertie (called "Pookie") is Arnold's grandmother. She's pretty freaky and crazy, and often noticeably absent-minded. She also enjoys playing the piano on the roof. The only day she is normal is a hot day when everyone else is close to going crazy.

"Big" Bob Pataki is Helga's father and owner of the Big-Bob-Beeper empire . He's a tough businessman. Bob Pataki's pride and joy is Olga, his older daughter, who is gifted and goes to college. He often confuses Helga with Olga and lets her feel how much more he thinks of Olga.

Miriam Pataki is Bob Pataki's wife. While her husband runs his Big Bob Beeper empire , she takes care of the household. In many episodes, Miriam is tired or confused, which according to Craig Bartlett, the show's creator, is due to a drinking problem. However, she occasionally surprises those around her with her abilities. Miriam's relationship with her daughter Helga is not very good, however.

Ernie Potts lives in Arnold's grandparents' pension. He works for a demolition company. In his “glorious” career he has already demolished 500 buildings. Ernie is very short and can sometimes not be very easy to get along with. He has a metal plate in his head.

Mr. Huynh is from Vietnam. He works in the El Patio restaurant and is very musical. For a short time he was a country singer. Mr. Huynh sent his daughter to the United States during the Vietnam War and later followed suit himself to look for her. Over 20 years later, he finds her.

Oskar Kokoschka is a real Schnorrer. While his wife is working, he lounges and eats all day. Although he constantly promises to improve himself and look for work, he never takes action on these words. One day it turns out that Oskar cannot read - Arnold teaches him to read.

Suzie Kokoschka is Oskar's wife. She is not to be envied - while she works, her husband pokes his way through with her. She often gets angry because of this and throws objects at Oskar.

Mr. Simmons is Arnold's fourth grade teacher. He took over the post of class teacher after Miss Slovak left school. Mr. Simmons is a kind, good-natured person with many visions and a weakness for psychology. He particularly likes to stage plays. When he is staging a Thanksgiving play, Arnold finds out by accident that Mr. Simmons' family is falling apart, from which he suffers greatly.

background

Most of the episodes are more funny - often ironic - in nature. Occasionally, however, the series also deals with serious topics, such as war (in this case the Vietnam War ). The series spreads a special message in that the heads of the characters have different, grotesque shapes (Arnold's nickname is, for example, " football skull "). This leads to the conclusion that a person's external values are completely irrelevant. This interpretation is also reinforced by the fact that Arnold's best friend Gerald is an African American and that Harold belongs to another religion, Judaism . In addition, the very different family names show that Arnold and his friends have ancestors from all over the world:

  • Pataki (Olga, Helga, Bob, Miriam): named after George Pataki , a former governor of New York.
  • Horowitz (Eugene): possibly German or German-Polish descent.

Movies

Hey arnold! The Movie

In 2002 the first movie Hey Arnold! The Movie hits US cinemas. The plot of the film was initially planned for a three-part episode, integrated into the television series, but was then turned into a movie. Arnold tries to save his neighborhood because an entrepreneur wants to destroy it and build a shopping center instead. The film was not a great success, so it was initially only released on VHS and DVD in Germany. The film has been approved by the FSK without any age restriction, but the film is sold with an FSK-12 seal. A second film that was initially planned and for which a script has already been written was never produced. The film was shown for the first time on sixx on November 12, 2011 . Nickelodeon first aired it on May 19, 2012 . The novel adaptation of the "Hey Arnold" film, written by Craig Bartlett and Maggie Groening , was first published in 2002 ( ISBN 978-0-6898-5136-0 ).

Since creator Craig Bartlett officially confirmed that Helga and Arnold were "made for each other" and will definitely get married, their future and the ultimate end of the series can be seen as a vision of Phoebe in the closing sequence of the episode "Married".

Hey arnold! The jungle movie

Originally there was supposed to be a second film, Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie , for which the last episodes of Hey Arnold! the prehistory was told. Arnold finds a diary that gives rise to the idea that his parents might still be alive. In the end he even finds a card hidden in his diary.

In the first film, Helga Arnold finally confesses her love, but the two cover up the incident in the end. This should be a prelude to actually bringing the two together. In the second film, Arnold should not only find his parents, but also recognize his feelings for Helga, whereupon the two would have become a couple. In addition, the eternally gasping Brainy was meant to play an exceptional role: In the middle of the second film, Helga was supposed to be psychologically at the end and almost give up her love for Arnold. This time, Brainy would have been the one who would have given her courage to live and also her will to continue fighting to get her Arnold.

The television film premiered on November 24, 2017 on Nickelodeon. The film has the above. The story was taken over in a few parts and was designed with a new focus and more contemporary. The film was broadcast on the German-speaking Nick channels on February 9, 2018 at prime time.
