Mothra ( Japanese モ ス ラ Mosura ) is a film monster (Japanese kaijū , literally: "strange beast, puzzling beast") from the Toho film studio.

Mothra is an oversized moth . Although Mothra is not assigned a gender in the Japanese original, the English synchronization gave her a female assignment, which was adopted in the German synchronization.

After Godzilla , Rodan and Varan , Toho developed Mothra, the fourth film monster. She had her first appearance in the film of the same name Mothra (1961). It is usually shown in its various stages of development (egg, larva , pupa and finally moth). In the majority of her appearances in films, Mothra is a "friendly" monster, but also causes destruction in the defense of her offspring. The depiction of Mothra differs significantly from the previous monsters, which were depicted as beasts with a rage of destruction. Mothra is a frequent opponent of Godzilla in the films, whereby she often emerges as the winner.

Mothra is one of the few Japanese monsters that did not work with suitmation . Instead, the Mothra figure was hung on (at least almost always) invisible threads and animated by puppet animation.

Family movie

Mothra is accompanied by two little fairy twins ( Emi and Yumi Itō ) who are originally called "Shobijin" ("little beauties"). You are in telepathic contact with Mothra and can call her for help through a magical song. This constellation made it clear in the first films that a different target group was being sought. The development to the family film continued in the Mothra trilogy (1996-1998).
