Frankenstein and the monsters from the sea ( Japanese ゴ ジ ラ ・ エ ビ ラ ・ モ ス ラ 南海 の 大 決 闘 , Gojira, Ebira, Mosura: Nankai no Daikettō , dt. "Godzilla, Ebira, Mothra: Great Duel in the South Seas") is a Japanese monster film (Japanese Kaijū Eiga ) with the giant lizard Godzilla as the main character. Contrary to the title, the film has nothing to do with Frankenstein ; this only appears in the German distribution title.

action

The young Japanese Ryota learns that his missing brother Yata may not have died in a boat accident, but is actually still alive. That's why he steals a yacht with his friends Mita and Yata; together the men go in search of the missing person. They find Yashi on board, who is also unauthorized on the yacht. The next morning, the friends discover that Yashi has taken the yacht out to sea.

During the journey the yacht is attacked by the giant crab Ebirah; the men can save themselves on the beach of an island. There they meet the young girl Daiyo. This tells of a man living on the island who could be the wanted yata. The girl is one of the inhabitants of this island. These were enslaved by the organization "Red Bamboo", which experiments with chemical weapons on the island. This organization also pours a yellow substance into the water to keep Ebirah away from the island and complex.

In a cave, the friends find Godzilla lying in deep sleep. An attempt to break into the terrorists' factory and free the island's enslaved natives fails. The friends lay a long cable to Godzilla; a little later, lightning strikes the cable and wakes Godzilla.

Mita can encourage the slaves to revolt against the "red bamboo" and gives them the idea to exchange the yellow substance for an ineffective substance in order to let Ebirah fight against the "red bamboo". In the meantime, Ryota finds his brother Yata again.

Godzilla and Ebirah meet; Ebirah loses out in the fight between the two. A little later Godzilla destroys the “red bamboo” factory. The members of the "Red Bamboo" activate a bomb to destroy the island, but are killed by Ebirah while trying to escape.

Giant moth Mothra transports the friends off the island in a balloon. When the island is threatened with destruction after the factory has been destroyed, Godzilla jumps into the water of salvation.

background

Originally, the production company Toho wanted to make the American giant monkey King Kong the main character of this film. But since the licensor Rankin / Bass did not like the idea, Godzilla was chosen as the main character, who (like the crab Ebirah) is portrayed in the suitmation process usual for Japanese monster films, i.e. by an actor in a rubber costume. King Kong, however, got his appearance for it in Ishiro Honda's King Kong - Frankenstein's son the following year.

reception

The budget for this film was $ 3.45 million and grossing was $ 4.21 million.

The film received mostly poor ratings, 57 percent of the critics rated the film as positive on the Rotten Tomatoes website . The film also got a bad result with the audience, where 38 percent of the audience liked the film.

“A simple horror story constructed, primitive in design and sometimes involuntarily funny. (TV title: "Godzilla - The monster from the sea") "

“This color widescreen film, shot with considerable effort and very clever trick [...], unfortunately represents an unfortunate, unclear mixture of agent and science fiction material, which also lacks the desired horror effect. In addition, the audience is misled by the title: Frankenstein does not appear in this so-called shocker. Nevertheless: possible from 14. "
