Godzilla against Destoroyah ( Jap. ゴジラvsデストロイア , Gojira tai Desutoroia ) is a Japanese Kaiju Eiga (giant monster movie) by Takao Okawara, who has worked with Godzilla - fight the dinosaur mutants and Godzilla versus Mechagodzilla II , the director took over. This film ends the Godzilla Heisei series that began in 1984 with Godzilla - The Return of the Monster . Godzilla vs. Destoroyah was the last Japanese Godzilla film before Roland Emmerich's Godzilla from 1998 .
action
When Miki makes a control flight over Godzilla's island, she discovers that the island no longer exists.
At the same time, Godzilla appears in Hong Kong , but his appearance has changed a lot. The back plates, areas of his legs , chest , arms and eyes glow red and there is steam from almost every pore in his body.
In the headquarters of the G-Force one is at first at a loss. But Kenichi Yamane, grandson of the famous Doctor Yamane and son of his foster son Shinkichi ( Godzilla , 1954), has a theory as to what is wrong with Godzilla: Godzilla's body is like a nuclear power plant that is about to explode. The reporter Yukari Yamane, the granddaughter of the famous doctor and sister of Kenichi, is now trying to find out information about a new invention by the scientist Doctor Ijuin. Because her aunt Emiko Yamane, the daughter of Dr. Yamane, warns that the new invention is a modification of the Oxygen Destroyer.
Strange accidents are common in Tokyo . Doctor Ijuin discovers that when the Oxygen Destroyer was first used in 1954, which killed the first Godzilla, several organisms were encountered that went undetected over the years but are now beginning to mutate.
The Super-X III blasts Godzilla with cooling rockets to delay the approaching explosion. Kenichi has found that this does not cause an explosion, but a core meltdown , which is much more devastating than an explosion.
The organisms have now grown significantly to human size. The army tries to kill the creatures with ultra-low temperature weapons. This attempt remains unsuccessful: the beings merge into an even larger creature, which Doctor Ijuin calls Destoroyah. The people in the G-Force only see one way to stop Destoroyah: Since Godzilla is not allowed to fight, because the meltdown sets in even faster, Miki and Meru Ozawa try telepathy to bring Godzilla junior to Destoroyah. He actually manages to incapacitate Destoroyah for the time being.
Godzilla has arrived in Tokyo in search of his son. Both communicate with each other, but it doesn't take long before Destoroyah returns, bigger and more powerful than before. He immediately goes to the two of them and takes revenge on Godzilla junior by throwing him into a building. Godzilla junior then dies.
Furious with rage, Godzilla fights Destoroyah to the blood. The Super-X III is waiting nearby to freeze Godzilla at the right moment. He goes to his son, breathes his last life into him and finally destroys Destoroyah with the help of the army.
But Godzilla is ailing, his back plates are starting to melt. He is bombarded with cooling rockets from the Super-X III and the G-Force to stop the meltdown. Shortly afterwards Godzilla dies.
Miki, close to tears, says: "Your work is now done, Godzilla."
At the end, however, you see Godzilla Jr. again, who absorbed the atomic radiation released by Godzilla's death and now looks just like old Godzilla.
background
Director Takao Okawara had the proposal to let Godzilla die in 1993 for Godzilla versus MechaGodzilla II , but the Tōhō bosses decided against it. Two years later they put the proposal into practice. On the one hand, with Gamera - Guardian of the Universe , the rival company Daiei had brought an impressive new start to the Gamera series, which was closed in 1980. Another reason was that the previous film Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla flopped at the box office. The Tōhō bosses realized that the announcement that the classic Japanese monster would die would generate a lot of publicity.
Godzilla vs. Destoroyah premiered in Japan on December 9, 1995 . In the evening Koichi Kawakita announced that he would retire from his post, but in 1996 he took over the management of the special effects for Mothra - The Seal of Elias . The film was released in Germany in June 2002 on VHS and DVD and on May 30, 2014 on Blu-ray .
For two of the forefathers of Kaiju Eigas , this was the last involvement in a Godzilla film: Ifukube Akira and Tomoyuki Tanaka . Tomoyuki Tanaka, who had produced all Godzilla films from 1954 to 1995 , died on April 2, 1997. Ifukube did not provide any new music for a Godzilla film after this film and died on February 8, 2006. His previous contributions were, however, in the following Japanese Godzilla films used again, which is why it was always stated in the credits. Also embodied Momoko Kōchi the role of Emiko Yamane, which was the female lead in the original of the 1954th This also became her last film, she passed away on November 5th, 1998.
Actually, the Tōhō bosses wanted to let another 10 years go by, as most recently between the last film in the Showa series The Devil's Brood from 1975 and the first film in the Heisei series Godzilla - The Return of the Monster from 1984 . But in 1999 Takao Okawara took over the direction of Godzilla 2000 - Millennium again .
reception
The worldwide box office result was around 37.2 million US dollars.
The film was named the Best Rated Godzilla Film on the Rotten Tomatoes website . The film was 100 percent positive with the critics. The audience also liked the film (97 percent positive).
