In 1993, Godzilla against Mechagodzilla II (original title: Gojira tai Mekagojira ) was the 20th Godzilla film . As in the previous film, Godzilla was directed by Takao Okawara - Battle of the Mutant Dinosaurs . The film was released on DVD on June 4, 2002 in Germany.

Actually, the film was supposed to be the last in the Japanese series, because a US Godzilla flick was already being planned in 1994, but it wasn't released until 1998.

action

After the robot of the Mecha King Ghidorah in Godzilla - Duel of the Megasaurs fell to the bottom of the sea, the people of the G-Force have now rescued it. Your plan is to develop a weapon from the wreckage of the future robot that will finally defeat Godzilla.

After a while, the robot will be finished. When a group of scientists carried out a research expedition on the island of Adonoa, they could hardly believe their eyes: they found a large egg, which it looks like is still in good condition. But as they begin to transport the egg, Rodan suddenly appears and attacks the team. In addition, Godzilla climbs out of the sea and attacks Rodan. The two giants forget the egg during their fight, and so the research team can run away.

Once in Kyoto , the egg is immediately examined by experts. Dr. Meanwhile, Omai explains to his young assistant, Azusa, that the egg sees her as his mother. Kazuma is now also in the G-Force, at Mechagodzilla. Kazuma, who is interested in pteranodons, makes his way to the egg. He also got to know Azusa.

A little later a baby godzilla hatches from the egg. When Godzilla suddenly appears, the military decides for the first time to send Mechagodzilla into battle. It seems that Mechagodzilla can really stand up to Godzilla, but a mechanical defect paralyzes Mechagodzilla for a while, and so Godzilla is on his way to Kyoto.

But he won't have the baby because the team has retired to a bunker. Kazuma, who was supposed to be on board the Mechagodzilla, but wasn't because he was with the professor, is fired from the G-Force and has to work as a parking lot attendant.

Meanwhile, the G-Force has devised a plan to defeat Godzilla. They found out that the baby has a second brain, located in the hip area; thus this also applies to Godzilla. One should now lure Godzilla into uninhabited area with the help of the baby and kill him there with the G-Crusher. Miki and Azusa try unsuccessfully to stop the project.

The G-Force is preparing to attack. But when the baby is already in the air, Rodan grabs the container in which Azusa and the baby are and sets off towards Makuhari. Now Mechagodzilla has to take care of Rodan instead of Godzilla. With the help of the flying war machine Garuda they manage to defeat Rodan. When Godzilla shows up in the bay, this time he can do enormous damage to Mechagodzilla. Only when Mechagodzilla unites with Garuda and becomes Supermechagodzilla can they almost kill Godzilla with the G-Crusher.

But Rodan sacrifices himself and gives Godzilla his energy. Godzilla ultimately defeats Mechagodzilla and takes his son with him into the sea.

reception

The budget was $ 9.5 million. The gross profit was 18 million US dollars.

The film received mostly positive reviews, the critics on the Rotten Tomatoes website rated the film 83 percent positive. The audience liked the film 71 percent.

title

Contrary to what the title suggests, the film is not a sequel to a film called Godzilla versus MechaGodzilla . The original title Gojira tai Mekagojira (Eng. "Gojira against Mecha-Gojira") is identical to that of King Kong against Godzilla (1974), which is known in the West as Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla was marketed. The film has been marked as II to avoid confusing the film with the 1974 one or mistaking it for a remake.
