King Kong - Demons from Space ( Japanese ゴ ジ ラ 対 メ ガ ロ , Gojira tai Megaro , Eng. "Godzilla vs. Megaro") is a Japanese " Kaijū Eiga" (monster film) from 1973. Contrary to the title, the film has nothing to do with it To do the giant monkey King Kong , the film received the title from the German distributor.

action

When the inventor Goro Ibuki had a picnic by the lake with his son Rokuro and brother Hiroshi, the three were surprised by a seaquake. On the drive home, they are outraged by the atomic bomb tests that caused the quake.

The underwater people Seetopia are startled by the atomic bomb tests. To get people to stop the tests, they ask the monster Megalon for help. In addition, they steal Goro's latest invention, the robot Jet Jaguar (which is called “King Kong” in German) and reprogram it. While Megalon is on the way and destroys a dam on its way, Goro manages to reprogram Jet Jaguar via radio. This immediately goes to Godzilla so that he can come to the rescue. The sea topians get reinforcements from space from monster Gigan.

Shortly before the now impending dispute, Jet Jaguar grows to the size of high-rise buildings. Godzilla and Jet Jaguar emerge victorious from the fight that now follows, which takes place on a meadow. Godzilla returns to the monster island, Jet Jaguar shrinks back to its normal size and accompanies its inventor home with his family, the empire Seetopia is destroyed.

background

The robot, which is called "Jet Jaguar" in the Japanese original, was renamed "King Kong" by the German rental company because of its advertising effectiveness. When the film hit American cinemas in 1976 and the premiere of John Guillermin's King Kong was imminent, the film, which was shown in America as Godzilla vs. Megalon was called, also borrowed from King Kong. An advertising poster showed Godzilla and Megalon fighting on the two towers of the World Trade Center (from which the American giant ape in Guillermin's King Kong version is shot down), although none of the scenes in the Godzilla film takes place in New York. But these measures didn't pay off: Godzilla vs. Megalon was the first Godzilla movie in the US to attract less than a million viewers.
