Tomoyuki Tanaka

Tomoyuki Tanaka ( Japanese 田中 友 幸 , Tanaka Tomoyuki ; born April 26, 1910 in Kashiwara , † April 2, 1997 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese producer who was best known for his Godzilla films.

Shortly after graduating from Kansai University in 1940, Tanaka joined Tōhō Studios. After four years with the company, he started making his own films. In his 60-year career at Tōhō, Tanaka produced more than 200 films. Along with Ishirō Honda , Shigeru Kayama and Eiji Tsuburaya , he is considered one of the creators of Godzilla. Tanaka connected with the Japanese fear of terror after the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki , which he tried to illustrate.

The first Godzilla movie, Godzilla , was released in 1954 (1956 in the US). He was followed by a series of 28 other Godzilla films by 2004. Tanaka also produced - mostly together with the Godzilla Trio - the science fiction thrillers Space Beasts ( 1957) and Matango (1963); The latter, also known as Matango, Fungus of Terror or Attack of the Mushroom People, won the Golden Turkey Award in 1979 in the Worst Vegetable Movie of All Time category. With Akira Kurosawa he made the film Kagemusha - The Shadow of the Warrior (1980), for which he received an Oscar nomination in 1981 and the Golden Palm (1980).
