action
In 1980 the JX-1 Hayabusa spacecraft discovered the wandering planet Gorath on its mission to Saturn, which was on a course towards Earth. The ship is then attracted by its gravitational field and destroyed.
The JX-2 Ōtori spaceship is now supposed to explore Gorath so that a solution to the impending collision can be found. The Japanese astrophysicist Dr. Tazawa drafts a plan on how to save the earth from being destroyed by an impact: he wants to install huge jet engines at the South Pole. These will then be ignited and push the earth into another orbit with an energy of 66 trillion megatons. The United Nations supports the plan.
Spaceship JX-2 Ōtori is nearly destroyed on its mission, but can successfully complete its mission and return to Earth. In the meantime, the nozzles at the South Pole have been completed and successfully started. As Gorath approaches Earth, its enormous gravity causes storms, earthquakes, and a huge tsunami that inundates Tokyo . The moon is also destroyed when it gets into Gorath's gravitational field. Finally, Dr. Tazawa's Earth Rescue Plan: Gorath flies past the earth and disappears again into the vastness of space.
backgrounds
At the request of producer Tomoyuki Tanaka, a giant walrus named Magma was integrated into the plot, which is awakened from its hibernation at the South Pole and has to be rendered harmless by a laser cannon when it attacks the Antarctic bases. The scenes have been removed from the American and German versions.
Despite the German film title, there are no extraterrestrial flying objects in the film . The film title was chosen. to build on the popularity of the British television series UFO .
