King Kong versus Godzilla ( Japanese ゴ ジ ラ 対 メ カ ゴ ジ ラ , Gojira tai Mekagojira , German "Gojira versus Mecha-Gojira", DVD title: Godzilla versus Mechagodzilla ) is a Japanese Kaijū film by director Jun Fukuda from 1974. It is about 1974 the fourteenth part of the Godzilla film series from the Tōhō film studio. The film is one of the first in which Godzilla competes against the gigantic robot Mechagodzilla.

action

An Okinawa legend has it that when a black mountain towers high above the clouds in the mountains, a monster will appear and try to destroy the world. A red moon will set and the sun will rise in the west. This optical illusion, a reflection of the sunrise, points to two other monsters that are supposed to fight this threat to the world.

In a cave near the city, an archaeologist and engineer discover a statue of the protector of Okinawa known as King Caesar. They realize that this could be one of the two monsters that will fight on the side of humanity. As a black mountain soars into the sky, Godzilla rises from a volcano. Nobody expected that Godzilla would be the monster who wants to destroy the world. The surprise is great when Godzilla attacks and almost kills his former partner Anguirus. However, it turns out that the monster is a robot constructed in the shape of Godzilla called Mechagodzilla. Mechagodzilla is a cyborg robot made of space titanium, made by ape-like aliens from space who want to wipe out Godzilla and conquer Earth.

The real Godzilla has long been looking for Mechagodzilla. In a duel with Mechagodzilla, Godzilla is almost killed and Mechagodzilla is badly damaged. Charged with electricity by a lightning storm, Godzilla returns to fight the repaired Mechagodzilla with the help of the reawakened King Caesar. Godzilla cuts off his opponent's head and is thrown into the sea. King Caesar returns to his cave.

Production and publication

The film was directed by Jun Fukuda and produced from a script by Jun Fukuda and Hiroyasu Yamamura . The music for the film was composed by Masaru Satō and Michiko Ikeda was responsible for the editing.

The film was released in Japanese cinemas on March 21, 1974, followed by the premiere in Germany (FRG) on December 20, 1974. The film was later released in cinemas in France, Finland and the USA, and the English version was released on video and DVD.

background

Just like in King Kong - Demons from Outer Space ( Gojira tai Megaro ) from 1973, the famous giant monkey does not appear in this film at all. Instead, Mechagodzilla was given the name "King Kong" in the German dubbed version to justify the misleading title. The German distributor had already used the same trick for the previous film, where the robot Jet Jaguar was simply renamed "King Kong".

In addition, the monster King Caesar ( Kingu Shīsā , in the English translation called King Caesar because of the similar pronunciation ) is shown for the first time. King Caesar is a canine-like creature with a lion head from the mythology of Okinawa ( Shīsā ) based on Chinese guardian lions . He has the ability to catch deadly rays with his eyes and reflect them on his opponent.

reception

The budget for this film was $ 1.11 million and grossing was $ 1.33 million.

The film received mostly positive reviews. The critics on the Rotten Tomatoes website rated the film as positive 71 percent. The audience rated the film similarly, 62 percent thought the film was good.

"A very naive science fiction film in which at least the pyrotechnicians have done a remarkable job."
