action

Dr. Emma Russel, a paleontologist , and her daughter Madison are in a secret base owned by the Monarch Organization, an organization that tracks down and researches giant monsters called titans. Together with the staff of the base in China, both witness the birth of Mothra , a giant moth. Due to a safety incident, Mothra, which is still in the larval stage, is provoked, so Emma has to use the ORCA she developed. This technical device, which simulates the bio-communication signals of titans, allows the titans to either calm down or make them aggressive. As the situation is just about to de-escalate, an armed group of mercenaries from eco-terrorist Alan Jonah storms the base, kidnaps Emma and Madison and shoots the rest of the staff. Mothra escapes and pupates in a nearby waterfall.

Because of the abduction of Emma and Madison, Dr. Serizawa, Dr. Graham and the rest of Monarch to Emma's ex-husband, Mark, who developed the prototype of the ORCA as a behavioral scientist.

Jonah travels to Antarctica with his mercenaries, Emma and Madison , where another Monarch outpost is where the so-called monster "Zero" was found. They succeed in overpowering the staff stationed there before sending a cry for help, whereby they can free the monster frozen in the ice, which turns out to be King Ghidorah , with an explosion . Shortly afterwards Godzilla arrives and a fight between the two titans ensues. Dr. Graham killed by Ghidorah. Ghidorah defeats Godzilla and flies away.

While Monarch is looking for Emma, who is actually working with Jonah, she frees the gigantic pterosaur Rodan from a volcano in Mexico . She wants to free the titans so that they can catapult humanity back into the Stone Age and heal the earth with the radiation they emit, which has already happened in Las Vegas and San Francisco.

During the second battle between Godzilla and King Ghidorah, a new military weapon is deployed that is said to kill any life within a two mile radius. Both opponents are under water when they are hit by this weapon. But against all hope, King Ghidorah survives the explosion unharmed, while Godzilla's vital signs are getting weaker and weaker. It turns out that King Ghidorah is no ordinary Titan, but an alien from space, about which the people of prehistory did not leave a record out of fear.

Now that Godzilla has been dethroned as King of the Monsters, King Ghidorah awakens the remaining titans on earth, who under his rule now begin with the destruction of humanity. Knowing that coexistence between the Titans and humanity will only be possible with Godzilla, Stanton, Mark and Serizawa set out on a search for Godzilla. They discover that the hollow earth theory applies and that Godzilla used underground channels to get from one place on earth to another.

After Mothra was observed making contact with Godzilla, the scientists follow this trail and come across a city that was sunken thousands of years ago and where the titans were worshiped as the "original gods" aboard a submarine. In an underground cave they finally find Godzilla, who is fortifying himself at a radioactive source. Since this process would take years, however, the scientists decide to "defibrillate" Godzilla with a nuclear warhead. Since the weapon systems of the submarine were damaged, which is why no nuclear torpedo can be shot down, Serizawa finally offers to carry out the suicide mission to strengthen Godzilla. He hands Mark and Stanton his notebook with the request to share the information about the titans with the world and sets off with a nuclear warhead. Once in the cave, he drags the weapon to Godzilla and activates a time fuse. Shortly before the expiration, he says goodbye to Godzilla. The atomic explosion kills Serizawa and destroys the sunken city, the submarine escapes in time.

Godzilla, now in full possession of his powers, emerges from the sea, eyes the surfaced submarine and sets off for Boston to face Ghidorah. On Mark's advice, Monarch employees, along with the US armed forces, decide to join the fight. The two monsters have a final clash, in which Rodan and Mothra intervene in the meantime. In the end, Godzilla stands in the ruins of Boston and roars his victory out into the world while the other titans bow to him.

In the first minutes of the credits, the sequel Godzilla vs Kong is teased, in which more and more reports about King Kong's homeland Skull Island appear. In the post-credit scene, it is also revealed that a single head of Ghidorah survived the fight with Godzilla and is being offered for sale by a fisherman in a secret location to the escaped eco-terrorist Alan Jonah. Jonah strikes.

production

Michael Dougherty at Comic-Con in San Diego in July 2018

The film is a sequel to Gareth Edwards' Godzilla from 2014. This was directed by Michael Dougherty , who also wrote the script with Max Borenstein and Zach Shields . Edwards was originally intended as a director, but this withdrew from this project after his Star Wars spin-off Rogue One: A Star Wars Story . The film music was composed by Bear McCreary .

Filming ended in September 2017. Lawrence Sher was the cameraman . Post production was completed in November 2018.

The post-credit scene in Kong: Skull Island , in which cave paintings of the titans Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah were shown, provided the first clues about the framework of this film. A first long trailer was published as part of the Comic-Con in San Diego in July 2018. In this film, the monsters are given the name titans in order to avoid confusion about a possible reference to the film series Pacific Rim , in which the giant monsters are referred to as kaiju (after the Japanese word for monster). Pacific Rim was also produced by Legendary Pictures.

The film was released in German cinemas on May 30, 2019 and in US cinemas the following day. The premiere took place on May 13, 2019 in Beijing.

The film is dedicated to Haruo Nakajima and Yoshimitsu Banno. Nakajima was the actor who in the first major Godzilla film series, the Showa series (1954-1975), portrayed the giant dinosaur in the heavy costume. Banno was the director of Frankenstein's 1971 battle against the devil monsters and co-producer of the US prequel from 2014. Both died in 2017.
