The film is a continuation of the film Godzilla against MechaGodzilla , which was released a year earlier, and also makes a great reference to the 1961 Mothra threatens the world . As with its predecessor, Masaaki Tezuka directed it.

action

Japan 2003: One year after the battle between Godzilla and Kiryū in Shinagawa , an unknown and unidentifiable flying object penetrates Japanese airspace. This is Mothra, the protector of the earth, who is able to escape her pursuers, two jets of the Japanese Air Force.

Mothra's destination is a small mountain hut where scientist Dr. Shin'ichi Chūjō is on vacation with his grandchildren Yoshito and Shun. This leads to a reunion between the scientist and the cosmos. They have an urgent request that the doctor should convey to the Japanese government: they should sink the kiryu, which consists of the Godzilla skeleton, in the sea in order to restore order to the flow of time, and the robot attracts Godzilla. Yoshito, who belongs to the maintenance team of the Kiryū unit, rejects this, because he sees Kiryū as the only way to defeat Godzilla. But the Cosmos make their promise that Mothra will come and protect Japan. In view of the former destruction of Tokyo by Mothra in 1961, Yoshito remains skeptical.

In the dock, where the giant robot is being repaired and serviced, the extent of the damage from the fight against Godzilla becomes clear for the first time. You can replace the lost arm, but the Absolute Zero cannon is irreparably damaged. Reporters and journalists see the skeleton of the first Godzilla built into Kiryu as the cause of Godzilla's attacks on Japan. Also, some believe that rebuilding Shinagawa should be a higher priority than repairing the robot.

But not only the repair and maintenance of Kiryū is on the program of the unit, a new task force is to control Kiryū, as the previous members Akana Yashiro, Kenji Sekine and Susumu Ya leave the unit to work on new fighting techniques and strategies in the USA To learn an emergency. Azusa Kisaragi becomes the new pilot of the Shiragasi aircraft, who meets Yoshito at the farewell party.

Meanwhile, his uncle Shin'ichi tries to convince Prime Minister Igarashi to give up the kiryu program and sink him into the sea. But the Prime Minister refuses this request. He sees Mothra as just as dangerous as Godzilla due to their previous attack and points out that the country needs the robot to defeat Godzilla.

At the same time, the giant turtle Kameba was found dead on the Japanese coast. The animal has severe wounds on its neck caused by an animal's claw, such as Godzilla's. But not only Kameba met a fatal fate, an American nuclear submarine is attacked and sunk by Godzilla in the Pacific near Guam .

The scientists are currently discussing a possible repair of Kiryū's Absolute Zero cannon, but the crystal that is the centerpiece of the cannon is so badly damaged and the crystal is very rare. So the repair plan for the Absolute Zero cannon is abandoned. Instead, they want to declare Kiryū ready for action, which Yoshito wants to prevent because the last checks have not been completed. But since this would last at least six months, one does not listen to him, as Godzilla can appear at any time.

This action brings Yoshito into conflict with the new operator Kyōsuke Akiba, the son of the Japanese defense minister. A dispute ensues, which Lt. But Togashi finished. After talking to Azusa, he is sent a subpoena to the Ministry of Defense. There he is questioned after the conversation between Prime Minister Igarashi and his uncle Shin'ichi about the incidents in the holiday home and about Mothra.

Meanwhile, Godzilla reappears and fights the Japanese Navy in the Pacific. However, this is powerless and can not stop its advance on Tokyo . The Kiryū unit was forced to act quickly and replaced its Absolute Zero cannon with a Hyper Maser unit. The plan of the military and the government is to lure Godzilla to Shinagawa again to be able to fight freely there and at the same time to keep the damage as low as possible. The city is evacuated.

The Chūjō family are also getting ready to flee Tokyo, but Shun has suddenly disappeared. When Shin'ichi notices that the Mothra Stone has disappeared, he fears that Shun is somewhere in town to call Mothra. He suspects that Shun is using the same trick that he used to lure Mothra into the Tokyo airport. Time is of the essence as Godzilla has reached Tokyo Bay.

The army tries to stop Godzilla with cruise missiles, Maser tanks and tanks, but unsuccessfully. The Kiryū unit is working feverishly to complete the repairs to the robot. At the same time, Shin'ichi finds Shun on a school site where Shun actually set up the symbol of Mothra with tables and chairs. It works, Mothra appears over Tokyo and attacks Godzilla.

Yoshito is told that his uncle and nephew are still within the danger zone and asked again about the incidents in the holiday home. Meanwhile, Godzilla and Mothra continue to fight relentlessly. But Godzilla is stronger, so Mothra takes the last resort with her wing dust. Prime Minister Igarashi realizes this and orders the use of Kiryū to assist Mothra.

Despite the missing check-up, Kiryu is made ready for use. The robot just manages to stand by Mothra and keep Godzilla from making the final blow against her. However, he cannot prevent Mothra from being badly wounded. The Cosmos watch the fight with great concern when suddenly two Mothra larvae hatch from one of Mothra's eggs and make their way to Tokyo to assist Mothra and Kiryū.

Meanwhile, Yoshito goes looking for his relatives, but doesn't find them on the school grounds. Only after he drives through the streets of Tokyo does he find both of them injured and unconscious under the rubble that was created during the battle of the giant monsters. So he helps the two of them and takes them to the army base in Shibuya Park, where they receive medical care.

Meanwhile the fight continues. After Kiryū injures him, Godzilla manages to gain the upper hand and inflict severe damage on Kiryū when the Mothra larvae reach Tokyo. You manage to lure Godzilla away from the robot, but are also hit badly by its heat rays. When Godzilla tries to attack the Mothra larvae, Mothra flies in the way and intercepts the heat ray, which is why she catches fire and finally explodes. The damage to Kiryū is enormous, so the drive system is damaged and must first be repaired. That's why Yoshito reports to the command center and asks for Kiryu to be repaired. The Prime Minister grants him the request and with the help of the Tokyo subway system, he escapes the battle between Godzilla and the Mothra larvae, even if he is almost killed by the rubble. The Cosmos help him get to Kiryū while Azusa distracts Godzilla.

In close contact with his colleagues, Yoshito repairs the damage and manages to make Kiryū operational again. However, Kiryū is hit by the heat rays from Godzilla, which is why he can no longer leave Kiryū due to damage to the exits. To prevent a rescue mission, he pretends to have brought himself to safety. However, Kiryū can now fight again, with the parliament building being destroyed. Nevertheless, he manages to severely wound Godzilla's stomach with a drill and additionally weaken him with the Hyper-Maser unit. The Mothra larvae take advantage of this moment and spin it into a cocoon in which Godzilla collapses.

Yoshito, meanwhile, asks Kiryū for forgiveness for having been used as a weapon. With the help of an on-board computer, the robot also forgives him. He grabs the spun Godzilla and flies with him into the Sea of Japan, where he wants to sink into a deep-sea trench with him. Since this would also mean the end of Yoshito, Yoshito admits to have lied and that he is still in Kiryu. Azusa flies after Kiryū and shoots open the door with the on-board guns.

Meanwhile, Kiryū rotates so that Yoshito can jump off unscathed and says goodbye to him. Azusa catches him with the help of the ejection seat and both end up unharmed in the sea. Kiryū also dives and sinks deeper and deeper with Godzilla until the connection is broken. While Yoshito mourns Kiryu, the Mothra larvae return to Infant Island.
